Northwest rodeo team opens spring season in Bozeman

Knerr 2nd in all-around; men win team roping

The Northwest College rodeo team ended its winter layoff with a strong showing in Bozeman, Mont., April 4-7.

The men’s team held on to second place in the Big Sky Region while the women’s team put in work to climb up from the bottom of the standings. The men finished fourth of six in team scoring in the first Montana State University rodeo April 4-6 and fifth of eight in the second MSU rodeo April 7.

The men were led by strong performances in steer wrestling, tie-down roping in the first rodeo and team roping in the second.

Newt Michael Novich took second in steer wrestling with a time of 13.4 seconds, barely edging out fellow Trapper Eric William Knapp’s time of 15.5.

Colton Redmond placed third in tie-down roping with a time of 30.6 seconds. The team of header Shawn Bird and heeler Zachary Schweigert won the team roping event with a time of 5.2, a full 1.4 seconds ahead of second place.

Redmond (header) and Devon Mitchell (heeler) placed fourth in a time of 8.6 seconds. Brady Raville (header) and Tel Blatter (heeler) tied for eighth with a time of 11.5 seconds.

Heather Nicole Knerr highlighted the women’s showing in Bozeman.

Knerr finished second in the women’s all-around with a score of 195. She also finished third in barrel racing with a time of 15.17 seconds, just .01 seconds behind second place, and fourth in goat tying with a time of 8.2 seconds.

JayAnn Laree Demarais was seventh with a time of 8.8 seconds, and Meagan Carol Raty clocked in at 9.3 seconds to tie for eighth.

Raty went on to take eighth in the first rodeo’s goat-tying event.

Kylee Mae McDonnell was fifth in barrel racing with a time of 30.75 during the first rodeo, followed closely by Knerr, who clocked in at 30.84.

Novich wracked up 150 points to take fifth in the first rodeo’s men’s all-around, and Redmond scored a 91.50 to take fifth in the men’s all around in the second rodeo.

Ethan Hecht finished eighth in the all-around in the first rodeo. Hecht took fourth in bull riding with a score of 32 and fifth in bareback riding with a 77.

Dustin Jean Morigeau placed sixth in saddle bronc riding with a score of 58.

Zane Not Afraid (header) and Novich (heeler) formed the only Trapper duo in the first rodeo’s team roping competition and placed seventh.

The Trappers compete next in Glendive, Mont., on April 25-27 at the Dawson Community College Rodeo.
