Panther track and field first at home meet

Hosts Cody in dual today

The Powell High School track teams didn’t let the role of host interfere with their pursuit of first place at Saturday’s L.A. Kohnke/Powell Athletic Roundtable meet.

The boys’ and girls’ squads each came in first place as Panthers continued to pile on pre-qualifications and new personal bests.

Two PHS relay teams hit the ground running Saturday. The girls’ 4x100-meter relay team of Kalina Smith, SarahJean O’Neill, Danna Hanks and KaDee Harrison took first and qualified for state with a time of 52.18. The boys’ counterpart, consisting of Kalei Smith, Zac Schuler, Chris England and Garrett Lynch, finished in second with a time of 46.20 and also qualified for state.

“Both 400 relays prequalified and showed a lot of room to improve,” said PHS head coach Scott Smith. “They are both sitting in good position to score at state.”

Kalina Smith’s third-place time of 13.31 was a new personal best and earned her a spot in the event at state.

Smith, Hanks and Anissa Warner impressed with their performances in the long jump. Each recorded jumps of at least 15 feet, 3 inches, which Coach Smith called “outstanding” considering the near-20 mph winds.

Hanks and Kalina Smith improved their automatic qualifying (AQ) times in the 100 hurdles. Hanks took second with a time of 16.74 and Smith was third with a time of 16.86.

Tori Sleep’s throw of 41 feet, 1 inch in the shot put was an improvement on her AQ, as was Garrett Lynch’s discus toss of 167 feet, 8 inches.

Chris England set a new best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.40.

Schuler’s individual times in the 110-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles impressed his coach, who said Schuler has “really improved since the beginning of the year.”

Coach Smith said Saturday’s weather made it tough for athletes to be at their best.

“Most times and marks were hard to improve on but the kids did a great job,” Smith said. “The best part was how well they competed in the tough circumstances.”

There was worry leading up to the meet that some events, if not all, would be canceled.

“I was just ecstatic to get all the events in before the rain and snow came,” Smith said.

As a backup plan, Powell and Cody discussed the possibility of a weekday dual meet in the event Saturday’s meet would be canceled. Even though the Powell invite was completed, each school decided to continue with a dual, set for 4 p.m. today (Tuesday).

“With Easter weekend coming up we don’t have a meet,” Smith said. “We figured it would be a better workout than just having practice and a lot more fun.”

Smith also thanked everyone who helped run the meet, which went off without a hitch.

“That meet ran just flawlessly,” Smith said. “Coaches were all ecstatic about how quick it went.”

NOTE: Kalina Smith was named the Outstanding Freshman at the Roy Peck Invitational in Riverton.
