Zach Heny came off the bench to spark the Powell High School boys' basketball team to a 61-51 win over Lyman Saturday afternoon.

In Saturday's matinee contest, Powell had to play the first three quarters without senior Hayden Cragoe, who reportedly was suffering from the flu.

Senior Forrest Christiansen, a 6-6 post, took his place in the starting lineup, but Powell quickly went to a smaller lineup, as Heny, about a foot shorter, came in for Christiansen. The move paid off quickly.

After the Eagles jumped to a 4-0 lead, Heny immediately nailed a pair of 3-pointers to put the Panthers up 6-4, and junior Kalei Smith, who led Powell with 15 points and passed well throughout the contest, kept the outside shooting going with another 3 to boost the PHS lead.

When Heny hit his third 3 of the period, the Panthers had a 18-8 lead after one quarter.

Senior post Garrett Michael, who added 11 points, hit his first three shots to keep Powell comfortably ahead, and Heny hit yet another 3 to help the Panthers go into halftime leading 32-23.

Head coach Chase Kistler said Heny did just what he was asked, his offensive spark was the difference in the first half.

Smith slammed home a breakaway dunk early in the third to keep the Panther edge at 10, and Powell continued to maintain control of the game despite being dominated on the glass.

But that trend turned as the Eagles rallied and slowly cut into the lead, helped by Powell's poor shooting from both the field and foul line. By the end of the third quarter, Lyman had pulled to within 40-38.

The Panthers quickly seized control at the start of the fourth quarter, as Cragoe, who came off the bench to play, tipped in a Heny miss to build the lead to four. After a 3-pointer from the Eagles, Baxter scored inside and Blake Schwan added another hoop to build the lead.

When Smith scored, Powell was up seven and Lyman was struggling to stay in the game.

When Baxter made a pair of free throws, the lead was nine. Cragoe, who seemed very active on both offense and defense, soon added another pair from the charity stripe — he made all six free throws he shot in the period — and Powell had a 10-point edge.

All the Panthers had to do was hold on from there, and they did, closing out Lyman, which has yet to win a game on its home court this season. Kistler said he was once again pleased the Panthers, who struggled with closing games out earlier in the year but did the job properly this time.

The Eagles, now 2-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play, were paced by senior Tyson Gillies on both ends of the court.
