Powell Cub ballers win conference

The Powell Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team beat Cody 52-41 in the conference championship to finish the season a perfect 13-0.

The Cubs trailed 18-17 at the half, but overcame their only halftime deficit of the season with an 18-point third quarter.

Kain Baxter and Ray Weingartner combined to score 44 of the Cubs’ 52 points.

Baxter netted 23 while also working the boards and Weingartner tallied 21 as he maneuvered through Cody’s press.

Kaelan Groves added four points and Kanyon Gann and Brinson Cozzens each scored two.

Powell did away with Greybull 50-27 in the Dec. 14 tournament’s first round.

Weingartner led the Cubs with 18 points and Baxter added 10. Gann scored nine, Groves notched six, Jacob Harrison had five and Cozzens had two.

The regular season ended with a pair of Cub blowouts on Dec. 3.

Powell held both Burlington and Lovell to just 12 points each in the two wins.

Weingartner scored 14 points and Groves had 13 in the Cubs’ 43-12 win over Burlington.

Later that day Powell jumped out to an insurmountable 21-0 lead and beat Lovell 38-12 behind Baxter’s 16 points. Weingartner scored 11 and Groves chipped in six.

The Cubs faced Cody for a second time on the season on Nov. 26, in a game that proved Powell had a legitimate threat in the conference.

Powell prevailed 36-33 but only after fending off the Cougars’ fourth-quarter comeback try.

A Groves 3-pointer and two Weingartner buckets down the stretch iced the win for the Cubs.

Weingartner led with 18 points, Groves had nine and Baxter added seven.

The Cubs led Burlington by just one point after the first quarter but exploded for 40 points in the final three frames to win 44-12 Nov. 21.

Burlington’s zone defense was scrapped when Groves hit three 3-pointers in his 15-point second quarter. Groves finished with 16 points. Weingartner scored 14.

Powell used a 21-0 third-quarter run to beat Rocky Mountain 48-18 Nov. 19. Weingartner led the way with 16 points, followed closely by Baxter’s 14.
