The Powell Middle School swim team won four events and was the runner-up at the 2013 Conference Championship meet in Powell Dec. 10.

The Cubs scored 341 points and finished behind only Worland, which scored 389.5. Cody took third with 191 points and Lovell was fourth with 180.5. Neither Cody nor Lovell won any events.

Kacey Creed won the 200 free and 50 fly, JuliaKay O’Neill won the 50 back. Powell claimed the 100 free relay as the Panthers took second place.

All three individual victories by the two eighth graders were won in personal-best times.

Creed swam the 200 free in 2:17.85 — a 1.26 second improvement — and won the 50 fly with a time of 30.35 — a time cut of 1.45 seconds.

O’Neill trimmed nearly a half-second in the 50 back on her way to a first-place time of 32.79. O’Neill also finished in third in the 1-meter diving competition. She scored 86.5 points, 12 more than her previous best.

Seventh-grader Caitlyn Miner was the runner-up in the 50 breast with a personal best time of 36.80, which was just .48 seconds behind first. Miner was also fourth in diving with 84.6 points.

Kendyl Bohlman finished third in both the 100 and 200 free events. Bohlman cut 1.93 seconds off her time in the 100 and 4.83 seconds off her 200 time. The eighth-grader’s time of 1:06.86 was just .11 seconds off the second-place pace.

Eighth-grader Braden Schiller was third in the 50 back and fifth in the 200 free. Schiller’s time of 36.77 in the 50 back equaled his best, which was posted in the qualifying heats. He made major improvements in the 200 free, in which he cut 5.58 seconds for a time of 2:38.55.

Asher Brooks was third in the 50 free and sixth in the 1-meter diving competition. Powell’s top swimmer in the 50 free cut 1.22 seconds and was a tenth of a second behind second place. Brooks, an eighth-grader, posted a score of 75.30 in diving after qualifying with an 87.95, which would have been good for third place in the finals.

Eighth-grader Gavin Asay took fourth in the 50 breast and fifth in the 100 IM. Asay cut 1.13 seconds in the IM to finish as Powell’s top swimmer with a time of 1:23.88.

Trenton Wilson took fourth in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 free, each with personal best times. Wilson’s time of 1:12.10 was a 1.57 second improvement in the 100, and he cut .41 seconds in the 50 to finish at 33.16.

Joey Haire cut .52 seconds on her way to a fifth-place finish in the 50 free and also took sixth in the 50 back.

Eighth-grader Rylie Kannard cut 3.08 seconds to place fifth in the 100 free and trimmed another 5.33 seconds and finished ninth in the 50 back.

Dagne Stratton finished seventh in the 100 free with a time of 1:16.65, a 7.24 second improvement.

McKennah Buck took seventh in the 50 fly, Sydney Horton placed eighth in the 50 back, Joseph Rogers finished eighth in the 50 free and Emily McCaslin was ninth in the 50 breast.

Horton cut .35 seconds in the 50 back, Rogers bested his previous time by 2.48 seconds and McCaslin improved her time by 1.62 seconds.

McKenzie Thompson was 10th in the 100 free with a new personal best of 1:17.50 and Rylee Ramsey was 10th in the 50 fly.

Powell’s victorious 100 free relay team was comprised of Wilson, Haire, Kannard and Brooks.
