The PHS wrestling squad waited until the final moment to claim its second straight Class 3A championship Feb. 22-23 in Casper.
Junior (now senior) Zach Thompson battled through a rib injury and pinned Star Valley’s Jordan Semadeni with just 28 seconds remaining to clinch the title for Powell in the winner-takes-all match.
Head coach Nate Urbach said Thompson’s bout was one of the most exciting he’s ever seen.
“I honestly didn’t think he could beat him with his ribs as bad as they were,” Urbach said. “But he showed the heart of a champion and rose to the occasion.”
Thompson’s win earned him the 195-pound belt, the second individual title to be won by a Panther that day.
Then-freshman Kye Catlin won the 138-pound title when he beat fellow Panther Matt Widdicombe.
“He does not wrestle like a freshman,” Urbach said of Catlin. “We’ll definitely separate the two next year.”
Nic Urbach was the state runner-up at 113 pounds. Colbee Craig took third at 120 pounds, Colton Parham was fourth at 120, Tyler Patterson placed fourth at 170, Anthony Lujan was fifth at 152, Spencer Shultz took fifth at 182, Riley Stringer was fifth at 220 and Ty Linebaugh finished sixth at 126.
