The Powell High School girls’ swim team added eight qualifications and made some significant time cuts in a victory over the Worland Warriors Tuesday evening in Powell.

The Panthers picked up eight qualifications, an impressive feat for a meet this late in the season, as it won eight of the meet’s 12 events.

Head coach Luke Robertson said he placed some of his swimmers in events they don’t swim too often, and the Panthers excelled from a change of pace.

“Late in the season sometimes it’s nice to put them in something different,” Robertson said.

Senior Lydia Allen added the 500 free and 100 breast events to her growing list of qualifications. Allen placed second in the 500 with a time of 6:34.51 and her time of 1:22.47 was the third-fastest (though it was not counted toward the team score) in the 100 breast.

Sophomore Amanda Tracy had the second-fastest 100 breast time (1:20.77) as she qualified in her eighth and final event of the season.

Sophomore Tristan Bohlman won and qualified in the 500 free with a time of 6:14.89.

Senior Baxter Heinert didn’t qualify in any new events but swam one of the fastest 100 fly races in Powell High School history. Her first-place time of 1:06.65 (a 2.44 cut off her previous best) puts her fifth all-time in Panther history and is currently the fifth-fastest in Class 3A this season.

Heinert also won the 50 free with a personal best time of 27.86.

Junior Stephanie Liggett came in second and qualified in the 50 free with a time of 28.75. It was Liggett’s eighth qualification this season.

Panthers filled the top six spots in the 50 free. Liggett took second in the 100 free as well with a time of 1:02.99, 1.39 seconds faster than her previous best.

Junior SarahJean O’Neill qualified in the 100 breast with a 4A qualifying time of 1:17.69. She also swam a new personal best (1:15.95) in the 100 fly, likely her strongest event according to Robertson.

“Anytime you can cut anything in your strongest event, that’s saying a lot,” Robertson said.

Freshman Emily Doughty was the runner-up in the 100 back and qualified with a time of 1:15.23, just .07 seconds under the qualifying time.

Powell seized control of the 100 back by taking the top five spots and seven of the top 10.

Freshman Katie Doughty qualified in the 100 free with a third-place time of 1:04.58. She later cut 12.72 seconds in the 100 breast, in which she finished second but is still a few seconds shy of a qualification.

Sophomore Jace Sharp has been zeroing in on the 100 back qualifying time and swam her best time yet against the Warriors. Sharp finished third in the event with a time of 1:15.32, just .03 seconds shy of what she needs to make state.

“She’s been within just about a second the past three or four meets,” Robertson said.

Junior Ashley Dillon cut 5.91 seconds off her 200 free time in her sixth-place effort.

The Panthers will compete in their final home meet of the season at 5 p.m. today (Thursday) against Cody.
