The Powell Panthers volleyball team went 1-1 against two division opponents at home over the weekend.
Powell is currently second in the Class 3A Northwest Division after losing to first-place Jackson Friday and beating last-place Lander Saturday.
The Panthers kept it close against the Jackson Broncs (2-0, 12-6) but lost in straight sets 22-25, 26-28, 20-25.
“We played a hard-fought match against Jackson on Friday, coming just a few points short each set,” said head coach Cindi Smith.
Smith said the Panthers’ block wasn’t as effective as it could have been, and it cost them some points.
“We didn’t always set it correctly and our timing on the high set was off,” Smith said. “This is an area we will focus on and strive to improve.”
Senior Shawnea Harrington recorded 10 kills to lead Powell’s attack against the Broncs. Freshman Kalina Smith had eight and senior Cassidi Partridge had three.
“We are going to work to continue to see growth in our passing which will bring stronger offensive opportunities to our front line,” Smith said.
Powell’s consistent serving limited the points it gave up to Jackson. The Panthers made 97.1 percent of their serves. Sophomore Breanna Donarski (16-for-16), junior Jenni Ebersberger (12-for-12) and junior Kelsey Marchant (12-for-12) were all perfect from behind the serving line.
Ebersberger led Powell with 23 digs. Smith added 11 and Donarski had eight.
The Panthers turned it around Saturday afternoon and jumped on Lander on their way to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 victory.
Smith got back into double-digits with 11 kills, while Harrington had seven and junior Makaila Moore had four.
Moore was the only Panther to not miss a serve with an 8-for-8 performance.
Ebersberger and Smith each missed one serve and went an identical 13-for-14.
Ebersberger also had 20 digs. Smith was second on the team with 16 and Donarski had eight for the second-straight day.
Powell, which was ranked sixth in last week’s Wyopreps.com poll will look to make a move into the top five after No. 5 Glenrock (0-4, 8-11) currently sits in last place in the 3A East.
The Panthers hit the road today (Thursday) for a 6 p.m. match at Class 3A East Worland.
