Swim & Peddle at PAC set for Aug. 22

Safe summer fun for kids age 3-11

Powell children looking for one last exciting outing before the first school bell rings are invited to come to the first Swim & Peddle event Aug. 22 at the Powell Aquatic Center.

The free event will give kids a chance to engage in water activities and bike around Homesteader Park beginning at 10 a.m.

The event’s organization was a joint effort by Children’s Resource Center’s Robbi Welch, the Powell Aquatic Center and Powell Rec.

Swim & Peddle will “give kids the opportunity to celebrate being active and having fun,” Welch said.

Welch wants to encourage kids to utilize Powell’s community resources, such as the Powell Aquatic Center, Homesteader Park and the local shops and agencies that support healthy lifestyles.

“We wanted them to get out and enjoy the sun while they can,” Welch said.

Children ages 6 to 11 will begin the day with two laps around the continuous river. Each child will be equipped with a noodle for balance. Once out of the pool, the kids will hop on their bikes and ride two laps around Homesteader Park’s bike path.

The younger athletes, ages 3 to 5, will enjoy aquatic activities outside the PAC and then ride their bicycles or tricycles through an obstacle course. To add to the fun and to keep kids cool, riders will be misted with water while on the course.

Nick Coy of Larsen’s Bicycles will be on hand to conduct bike safety checks. He will make sure tires are properly inflated and chains are greased.

Each participant will be given a free popsicle. Swimmers need to provide their own swimsuits, bikes/trikes and helmet. Public Health will offer free helmets to children without their own.

Pre-register by Aug. 16 to be entered in a drawing for a free bicycle or youth punch pass to Powell Aquatic Center. Register with Powell Rec online at www.powellrec.com or by calling 754-5711.

Those who don’t register are still welcome to join the fun. Contact Powell Rec or Robbi Welch at 754-2864 with questions.
