Brinkerhoff and Gatlin only win
The Powell High School tennis teams hosted Cody last Tuesday, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Fillies on the girls’ side and being swept 5-0 on the boys’ side. The meet was the first varsity action for many of those in the Panthers’ lineup.
Torie Brinkerhoff and Shelby Gatlin picked up the only win for the Panthers, rallying to win their No. 1 doubles match by a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 margin. The No. 2 doubles of Christa Stutzman and Brooklyn Good started strong in their match, taking the first set 6-3, but falling 2-6 and 3-6 to lose two sets to one.
Haley Sanders and Madison McDonald wrapped up the action for the Panthers. The duo lost at No. 3 doubles by a 6-4, 6-2 final score.
On the boys’ side, Powell’s Cody Akin was swept 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while No. 2 singles player Matt Brown was skunked 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Akin and Blaze Flores had the day’s best result at No. 1 singles, losing 7-5, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Myles Rumholz and Chase Wentz lost 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 3 doubles team of Noah Fulton and Tanner Barngrover lost 6-2, 6-0 to their Cody counterparts.
The Panthers return to Cody this Tuesday to continue spring tennis action.
