Slimmed down Panthers strong in Lovell meet

Boys second, girls third overall

The Powell Panthers placed second on the boys’ side and third on the girls’ side at the Lovell Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers competed in the meet absent a number of their members, who were in action at Sheridan.

Bailey Sanders won the 800 meters with a time of 2:35.81. She joined teammate Tori Sleep in the discus as the only two event champions of the day for the Panther girls. Sleep tossed the discus 117-8 to win the event by 20 inches ahead of teammate Shawnea Harrington.

Harrington was also the runner-up in the shot put as the Panthers put together a 2-3-4 order of finish. Sleep and Lex Brady followed Harrington in the standings. Brady also placed fourth in the discus.

Gretchen Morretti added a third-place finish in the 1600 meters as the day’s only other individual top-three finish for the Panthers. Powell’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also captured second-place honors, with the 4x800 pairing of Bailey Sanders, Gretchen Moretti, Tally Wells and Sierra Morrow running fast enough to automatically qualify for the state championships in the event.

On the boys’ side, Powell junior Garrett Lynch finally had the opportunity to throw the shot put in outdoor competition this spring. The defending state indoor champion wasted little time, winning the event with a heave of 55-3 3/4 to establish the state’s best throw of the season. Lynch also added wins in the 200 meters and the discus.

The weight events were the Panthers’ strength on Saturday. Vince Sleep placed second in the discus behind Lynch. In the shot put, Powell had a 1-2-4-5 order of finish as Sleep, Garrett Michael and Riley Stringer all placed in the top six.

Also finishing as a double champion on Saturday for the Panthers was distance runner Zander Andreasen. Andreasen reached the finish line first in both the 1600 and the 3200. Marshall McArthur added a runner-up finish at 400 meters while Ezra Andreasen was the runner-up at 3200 meters.

In the final team standings, the Panther girls placed third overall. The team scored 94 points to finish three behind Lovell.
