Two Cub teams capture titles

The seventh grade girls and eighth grade boys at Powell Middle School captured team titles at the Powell Athletic Roundtable middle school track invitational last Saturday. The seventh grade girls ran away from the competition, finishing as the only school with more than 100 points. The eighth grade boys edged Worland by three points for their team title.

The eighth grade girls added a runner-up finish in the six-school meet while the seventh grade boys placed fourth in their first action of the year.

JuliaKay O’Neill and Mariah Phister were each multiple event winners for the seventh grade girls, who captured their title by more than 68 points ahead of runner-up Cody. O’Neill enjoyed a banner day, winning the long jump, the 400 and the 800 for the Cubs. She also ran legs on both the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays for Powell.

Phister was also a member of the 4x100 relay. She showcased her jumping abilities by capturing first place in the triple jump and the high jump. Other members of that winning 4x100 relay included 75-meter hurdle champion Maddy Hanks and McKenna Hanson.

Joining O’Neill on the 4x200 relay were Hanks, Aspen Aguirre and Emily Sweet. The foursome of Hanson, Kodi Stringer, Kendyl Bohlman and Kooper Stringer teamed up to carry the baton in the 4x400 relay, which also won, completing a sweep of the relays for the Cub seventh graders.

For the eighth grade girls, Teo Faulker was a two-event winner. Faulker ran to victory in the 1600 meters, clipping teammate Monse Morales at the finish line to win in a time of 6:20.02. Morales was clocked in a time of 6:29.15.

Faulker and Morales again finished 1-2 in the 800, this time with a clearer margin of victory. Faulker’s winning time of 2:54.14 was three and one-half seconds faster than Morales.

The pair also teamed with Rachelle Cole and Kalina Smith to win the 4x400 relay. Smith also captured the title in the 200-meter hurdles for Powell. Jennifer Bonander was the only other event champion for the eighth grade girls as she won the discus.

For the seventh-grade boys, Eyob Robirds and Josh Wolfe were the day’s only winners. Robirds captured first place in the 800, finishing in a time of 2:32.44. Robirds also earned a runner-up finish in the 1600 meters and also ran a leg on the runner-up 4x400 relay with Brooks Asher, A.J. Lewis and Aaron Smith.

Wolfe won the long jump with a distance of 14-9. He was also runner-up at 100 meters in a time of 13.54.

Powell’s eighth grade boys also crowned just two individual champions, but used a host of mid-range finishes to overcome the opposition and win the team race. Nate MaGill won the 75-meter hurdles and narrowly missed adding a 200-meter hurdle title to his credit.

Garret Henderson added a pole vault title for the Cubs. He would later head over to the track where he ran with Zach Easum, Paige Gann and Mason Olsen on the championship 4x200 relay.
