Boys win, girls second

The Powell High School track and field teams continued to capitalize on unseasonably warm early-season weather to flood the awards stand at the Worland D&D track invitational last Thursday. The Panther boys captured their second meet title of the season while the girls placed second, just nine points out of the top position.

For Powell’s girls, Shawnea Harrington added her name to the Panthers’ state roster with a shot put toss of 35-2, good enough for third place overall in the competition. Harrington also placed third in the discus, an event where she had already earned a spot in the state field.

KaDee Harrison narrowly missed adding a 200-meter qualification for the Panthers, placing second in a time of 26.96 seconds, just 0.06 seconds shy of the time needed to automatically earn a place on the track in Casper come May.

Gretchen Morretti scored the only individual championship of the day as she crossed the finish line as the top performer in the 3200 meters. Morretti won the event in a time of 13:27.91. The Panther girls also earned relay victories in the 4x400 and the 4x800 events.

Powell also had a number of second-place performances. In addition to Harrison’s performance in the 200 meters, the Panther girls had runner-up finishes from Megan Wagner in the 300-meter hurdles, Anissa Warner in the high jump, Brooke Lensegrav in the triple jump and Tori Sleep in the discus.

In all, the Panther girls picked up 145.25 points. That was enough to outpace everyone but the host Warriors of Worland, who finished with 154.25 points. Cody was a distant third in the standings with 90.75 points.

On the boys’ side, the Panthers picked up a new state qualifier in the pole vault as Brendon Phister finished as the meet runner-up with a clearance at 12-6. Teammate Hayden Cragoe, already a state qualifier in the pole vault, also cleared 12-6 at the invitational, but placed fourth based on the number of misses recorded at lower bar heights.

In all, six Panthers finished as individual champions in various events. Vince Sleep was a double winner for the second meet in a row. The senior weight specialist swept the shot put and discus titles. Sleep’s winning toss in the shot put was 50-6. He won the discus with a heave of 142-1.

Garrett Lynch, the defending 4A champion in the discus and 2013 state indoor champion in the shot put sat out both throwing events for the second meet in a row. Lynch instead showcased his speed, winning the 100 meters in a time of 11.8 seconds. Lynch narrowly missed adding the 200 meter title to his portfolio, cruising in with a time of 23.96 seconds.

Mat Abraham won his second 800-meter title of the season, this time breaking the finish line in a time of 2:11.95. Drew Feller added a title at the longest distance of the day, finishing in a time of 10:55.87. Teammate Zander Andreasen was less than two seconds behind in second place.

Andreasen also placed second in the 1600 meters.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Cragoe dominated the competition with a winning time of 16 seconds.

Overall, the Panther boys amassed 188.5 points, comfortably besting Cody, which finished as the runner-up with 154 points. Lovell was third with 133.5 points as the three schools pulled away from the remainder of the invitational field.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host their own invitational track meet at Panther Stadium.

Boys results — Powell 188.5, Cody 154, Lovell 133.5, Worland 40.5, Thermopolis 39, Rocky Mountain 26.5, Greybull 12, Ten Sleep 8, Riverside 1.
