Panther cheer team runner-up in Casper

The Powell High School cheer team finished second in the stunt event at the 2013 State Spirit Competition at the Casper Events Center March 6.

It was Powell’s best finish in the competition since the Panthers won stunt in 2010.

Head coach Vicki Walsh said the Panther cheerleaders gave their best stunt performance of the season at state.

“If they had to go out and perform their best one time, that’s the day they picked,” Walsh said.

The second-place finish earned the team a trophy, which was the team’s goal heading into the competition.

“I was very happy with second,” Walsh said. “It was just like a first place for (the cheerleaders).”

The Panthers originally thought a top-four finish would be enough to bring home some hardware, but with just seven teams in the stunt competition, trophies were awarded to only the top three teams.

That made the announcement of results a little more nerve-wracking for Walsh.

“I figured we would get top four but I didn’t know where,” Walsh said.

When it was announced that Douglas, a team that dropped three of its stunts, placed third, the Panthers knew they got at least second.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of them. They stepped it up and just went out there and gave it 100 percent,” Walsh said.

The Panthers did not fare as well in the non-stunt competition, finishing 13th out of 15th.

Walsh said the team was docked for not involving the crowd enough during the routine, though the rest of the performance was strong.

Walsh acknowledged the subjective nature of judged competitions but thought her team should have finished in the middle of the pack.

“Both our (stunt and non-stunt) teams went out there and nailed their routines,” Walsh said.

The Powell cheer squad also performed during the Panthers boys’ and girls’ basketball games at the 3A state basketball tournament in Casper.
