Team ascends rankings on eve of 3A West tourney

The Powell Panthers moved into the No. 1 spot in the latest Class 3A wrestling rankings posted by wyowrestling.com. Powell had spent 2013 ranked second in the polls behind Douglas. A strong showing at the Ron Thon in Riverton, however, jumbled the order.

The Panthers, the top 3A team at that prestigious tournament, vault up to No. 1. Star Valley also climbs a spot to No. 2, while Douglas falls to No. 3. Each of those three schools have now spent time at No. 1 during the season, attesting to the competitiveness of the 3A division this season.

Worland, Lander and Torrington hold down the last three spots in the week’s top six poll.

Those rankings will have a chance to further shake up this weekend as the Panthers and No. 2 Star Valley will both be in Mountain View for the 3A West regional tournament.

Two Panthers will carry No. 1 rankings within their weight classes to that tournament. Freshman Chance Karst was named 3A’s top-ranked wrestler at 106 pounds. Closer to the other end of the weight spectrum, junior Zach Thompson holds down the No. 1 ranking at 195 pounds.

Four additional Panthers — Nic Urbach (113), Andrew Feller (132), Kye Catlin (138) and Tyler Patterson (170) — are ranked No. 2 in their divisions. Panthers Dylan Rood (126), Matt Widdicombe (138) and Jacob Davis (145) are ranked third.

In all, a total of 16 Panthers were ranked in the latest poll. That total represents Powell’s highest count of ranked grapplers this season.

Additional Panthers in the rankings heading into Friday and Saturday’s regional tournament include Bailey Atkinson (sixth at 113), Colbee Craig (fourth at 120), Colton Parham (seventh at 120), Anthony Lujan (seventh at 152), Spencer Shultz (sixth at 182), Riley Stringer (fourth at 220) and Erik Denney (fifth at 285).
