Team suffers weekend loss at Western

The Northwest College men’s basketball team split a pair of Region IX contests last week, defeating Miles Community College 87-64 at home before falling on the road at Western Wyoming by an 81-73 final count.

Northwest played one of its best games of the season on Wednesday while dispatching Miles from the Hank Cabre Gymnasium. Junior Coleman led the way with 21 points. Jonothan Newsom added 14 points and brothers Jeffrey and Gabe Solarin finished things up with 13 and 11 points, respectively, to give Northwest four players in double figures.

Northwest’s interior attack was relentless, helping the team gradually pull away over the final 10 minutes of the first half for a 42-31. The lead remained in the low double-digit range throughout the early segments of the second half before attrition kicked in and the Trappers again appeared to wear Miles down as the second half progressed. Northwest was able to stretch its margin in the waning minutes of the contest to beyond 20 points for a decisive Region IX North victory.

Northwest College was dominant in virtually every stat category in the contest. The Trappers shot better than 53 percent from the floor, including a 6-for-13 performance from 3-point territory. The Trappers also held a one-sided 40-22 advantage on the rebounding glass, spearheaded by seven boards from both Newsom and Jeffrey Solarin.

The Trappers held Miles to less than 38 percent shooting for the night. Defensively, Northwest also forced Miles into 18 turnovers, including four steals by Coleman.

Northwest College fell by an 81-73 final score at Western Wyoming on Saturday. The team now sits at 14-7 overall and 3-4 in Region IX North action. A more detailed write-up on that contest will appear in Thursday’s edition.

The Trappers return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Gillette (10-8, 4-3). The Trappers host Dawson (4-14, 1-6) on Thursday night.
