Columns

It isn’t often that I am cheered by something that Republicans do, but last week was an exception, and even then, my cheer definitely was limited.

There are no guarantees with oil and gas; it’s up and down and that’s a fact of life in Wyoming — just like how the wind always blows out here.

It’s amazing how a negative encounter with a new neighbor, a long romance drought, and the Fox News Channel left on overnight can combine into one hell of a weird dream. I would prefer Donald Trump stay the heck out of my nocturnal hookups, but we don’t control such things. The subconscious writes the script.

As per a recent meeting with the Park County Commissioners discussing raising the county’s sales tax from 4 to 5 percent, my thoughts might not be worth a plug nickel, but I’ll include my 2 cents worth anyway. Make that 1 cent.

AMEND CORNER: A few odds and ends

Sometimes life makes a columnist’s life easy by handing him something big to write about.

This week has not been one of those times.

Oil just keeps getting cheaper, and I am simultaneously thrilled and worried.

My love affair with old song lyrics knows no bounds. My empathy for those too young to have ever tapped toes to a Guess Who beat is limitless. If I can help in some small way, then as Simon and Garfunkel offered, “Like a bridge over troubled waters, I will lay me down.”

Suppose an armed gang of Paiute Indians took over the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon and demanded that ownership of the refuge be returned to them. How would the government react?

This business of getting old has a number of drawbacks.

One of those drawbacks is that more and more of the obituaries you see feature familiar names. That happened to me again Saturday when I read of the death of Kenny Sailors.

Iowa is constantly on national news during presidential campaign season, but what’s shown on national news is not a very good representation of what’s happening from the locals’ perspective.
