Audrey Lavern Staker ~ October 3, 2002

Audrey Lavern Staker, 73, died the evening of Thursday, Oct. 3, in Powell.
She was born June 15, 1929, in Cawker City, Kan., to Frank T. and Eva M. (Lent) Gilbert. On July 30, 1949, she and Gib Staker were married in Toppenish, Wash.
Throughout their married life, they lived in Riverton, Colorado, and Utah and moved to Powell upon retirement. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Gib, of the family home; sons Craig Staker and wife Lorna of Wamsutter, and Kim Staker and wife Linda of Casper; daughters, Linda Parkin and husband Larry of Cody, Carol Nowlin and Rita Duty and husband Jarrel, both of Riverton; brothers Cary Gilbert and wife Carol of Burlington, Wash., and Lloyd Gilbert and wife Joann of Washington; sisters Janice Bessler and husband Roy of Powell and Barbara Germany and husband Joe of Arlington, Tex.; brother-in-law Keith Staker and wife Carolyn of Boise, Idaho; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, a son, Steve, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Burial will be held privately in Crown Hill Cemetery at another time.
Should friends desire, memorials can be made to the Wyoming Breast Cancer Fund.

Gene H. Boyle ~ October 3, 2002

Word has been received here of the death Oct. 3, 2002, in Mesa, Ariz., of Gene H. Boyle, former Powell resident. He was 79.
He was born April 4, 1923, in Cozad, Neb., son of Roy and Nellie Hunt Boyle. He was the seventh child in a family of 12. He moved with his family to Powell.
He attended elementary school in Powell and Powell High School and was a member of the St. Barbara's Parish and held office in Knights of Columbus. Mr. Boyle worked for Fred Keller Trucking Company, for Stanolind Oil & Gas and on numerous drilling projects in South Elk Basin.
In 1935, six members of the Boyle family were stricken with polio in Powell, resulting in the death of one of the Boyle children, Harvey.
In April of 1944, Gene Boyle married Darlene Babich. To that union were born two sons, Elwin Gene in 1945 and Rorie Rene in 1951.
In later years, Mr. Boyle worked in public school maintenance and construction in Richland, Wash., and Bellflower, Calif.
Survivors include his sons, Elwin Gene of Great Falls, Mont., and Rorie Rene of San Fernando, Philippines; grandson Jack Allen Boyle of Phoenix,; his third wife, Jennie; his sister, Mary Boyle Malliot of Garland; and brothers Ernest Boyle of Powell and Raymond Boyle of San Bernardino, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nellie; siblings Edith, Albert, Frank, Louise, Harvey, Lois, Lawrence and Cecil; and second wife Ann.

William H. (Bud) Jones, II ~ October 4, 2002

Funeral services were conducted Oct. 9 in Roseville, Calif., for William H. (Bud) Jones, II who died Oct. 4 of a heart attack.
He was the twin brother of Georgia Hockley of Powell.
He was born Feb. 5, 1930 in Greybull. He graduated from Greybull High School in 1949.
He married Margaret Hoffman April 22, 1952, in Sacramento, Calif. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in April.
Among his co-workers, friends and acquaintances, he was known for his friendly smile, honesty, integrity and love for his family and others. He had a great love for Wyoming and spent as much time as he could visiting family and friends in the state and doing his favorite thing, fishing.
Survivors include his wife Margaret of Roseville; one daughter, Linda Matlock of Roseville; one son, William H. (Buddy) Jones, III of Surprise, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Gloria Robertson of Casper and Georgia Hockley of Powell.

Pauline Barnett ~ October 6, 2002

Pauline Barnett, long-time resident of Powell, died peacefully at her home in Clifton, Colo., on Sunday, Oct. 6.
She was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Wauneta, Neb., the seventh of eight children born to Della and Kearn Doolin.
She is survived by four daughters and one son, Doris Mathews Tennant of Clifton, Colo., Neree Mathews Barrett of Kaysville, Utah, Jo Sage Hanson, Wanda Sage McCollum and Tom Sage, all of Powell; one sister, Lucille Potter of Idaho; four sons-in-law and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by six siblings; one daughter, Gerry Sage Allen of Adrian, Mo.; and three husbands, Raymond Mathews, Ernest Sage and Charles Barnett.
Graveside services were conducted Oct. 11 in Baggs, where she was laid to rest beside her parents. She will be truly missed.

Paul Newman ~ October 7, 2002

Memorial services were conducted at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Casper Friday for former Powell resident, Paul Newman, 64, who died Monday, Oct. 7 at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
He was born Nov. 27, 1937, in Havre, Mont., son of Paul and Yvonne (Hebert) Newman.
He graduated from the Montana School for the Blind in Great Falls, Mont., in 1954 and graduated from the University of Montana, earning his bachelor's degree in education in 1958. He taught school in a one-room school house in Roy, Mont., on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation for one year. He graduated with his master's degree from Michigan State in 1961 and taught school again in Whitlash, Mont., from 1963-1965. He then began working for the State of Montana, counseling the blind.
He met his wife, Carol, in 1967. He fell in love with her and her young daughters and they were married March 15, 1968. The family moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1970 where he worked for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind for 10 years. He played clarinet, saxophone and sang in the dance band, The Moonlighters, in Edmonton for 10 years.
He worked for the State of Wyoming over 18 years as a visual consultant with the blind, living in Thermopolis, Powell and Casper. He retired in June 2000. He was a board member for the Montgomery Trust Fund for the Blind and was a former member of Kiwanis in Powell.
He volunteered at Meadow Wind and Garden Square Assisted Living Centers in Casper, playing selected old radio shows from his extensive collection. He collected classical, Big Band, country music and popular vocalists of his era on LPs, cassettes and CDs. He also had a collection of thousands of hours of old radio shows. He shared his passion for music with friends and family.
He was an avid sports fan and the best armchair quarterback the Oakland Raiders ever had.
Survivors include his wife Carol of Casper; daughter Lorraine Lee Newman of New York, daughter Debra Dee d'Aragon of Aurora, Colo., and daughter Eileen Lynn Yanssens of Casper; a sister, Adranne Howard of Waterloo, Iowa; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Carter.

Crystal Seline Harshman ~ October 9, 2002

Crystal Seline Harshman, 36, died early Thursday, Oct. 9 at Powell Valley Healthcare.
She was born Aug. 26, 1966, daughter of Kirk and Carol Harshman of Clark.
Survivors include her children, Blake Elizabeth Walkingheart, 9, and Clifford Phillip Walkingheart, 8; her parents, Kirk and Carol Harshman of Clark; her brother, Curt Harshman and family of Clark; her sister, Carei Smith and family of Powell; and her brother, Zach Hackenberg and family of Jackson.
Her family will remember that Crystal's children were the light of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her children, her parents and her family- siblings, nephews, nieces.
She had a zest for life and lived life to its fullest. She enjoyed music and dancing.
She will forever and always be cherished and remembered as a daughter, sister, mother and friend.

Bert Kendall ~ October 9, 2002

The graveside service at Crown Hill Cemetery for Wilbert Lester (Bert) Kendall, former Powell resident, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18.
Mr. Kendall died Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Springfield, Mo. Memorial services were held in Kimberling City, Mo., Sunday, Oct. 13.
He was a graduate of Powell High School in 1958. He married Gail Hatch in 1966, and they lived in Tulsa, Okla., for many years where he was employed by Unit Rig and Equipment Company. Later he and Gail owned and operated Arrowhead Point Resort and Campground on Table Rock Lake near Branson, Mo. In 1992, they developed the property into a subdivision.
Survivors include his wife, Gail; his mother, Geneva Kendall of Powell; a sister, Eva Havens and husband Jim of Joliet, Mont.; three aunts, Mrs. Hettie Rood of Powell, Helen Marlow of Clarkston, Wash. and Dee Kendall of Great Falls, Mont.; and several cousins, including Don and Sue Hammontree of Powell.

Faye M. Wilkerson ~ October 10, 2002

Faye M. Wilkerson, 88, died Thursday morning, Oct. 10 at the Powell Nursing Home.
She was born July 8, 1914, in Big Horn, Mont., to George W. and Ora (Marts) Smith. In 1934, she moved to Lovell and lived there until moving to Powell in 1993.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for Pacific Power & Light Co., retiring after 30 years of service. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and keeping her family in line. She loved keeping up her beautiful flower gardens.
Survivors include her sons, George Card and wife Ruth of Missoula, Mont., and John Card and wife Alice of St. Mary's, W.Va.; a daughter, Dorothy Johnson and husband Walter of Powell; eight granddaughters; one step-grandson and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank three special people who helped make her last months easier, Marilyn Nelson, Diane Rentschler and Betty Mauch.
She was preceded in death by her sister Mildred; her parents and two husbands, Floyd Card and J.S. Wilkerson. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, with private family services to be held at a later time.

Shirley Hayner ~ October 11, 2002

Memorial services are scheduled Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Union Presbyterian Church in Powell for Shirley Hayner, 55, who died Friday, Oct. 11 at her home in Powell after a long battle with cancer.
She was born Shirley Kaiser on March 28, 1947, in Billings, Mont., daughter of Alex and Frieda (Manweiler) Kaiser. She moved at the age of 2 to Wyoming with her family. She graduated from Powell High School in 1965.
On Oct. 25, 1968, she married Gordon Hayner in Cody. She lived in Cody until 1999.
She loved to bowl, fish, dance and spend quality time with her special friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Molly Kleiner and husband Tom of Lovell and Virginia Dyer and husband Richard of Amarillo, Texas; three granddaughters, Stormy Jones of Lovell and Britnee and LaRae Hayner of Amarillo, Texas; a grandson, Billey Kleiner of Lovell; great-granddaughters, Tameka and Chante Jones of Lovell; her mother and stepfather, Frieda and John Gilmore; three brothers, Ernest Kaiser of Phoeniz, Ariz., Ray Kaiser and Roy Kaiser, both of Powell; two sisters, Margret Reynolds of Indiana and Sharon Jordan and husband Cliff of Powell; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard William "Dick" Heasler~ October 11, 2002

A memorial service for Richard William (Dick) Heasler, who died Friday, Oct. 11, will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Trapper Gymnasium at Northwest College. He was 80.
Mr. Heasler was born May 24, 1922, in Douglas, son of John and Margaret Heasler. The Heasler family moved to Powell in March of 1930 where John Heasler worked in the oil fields as a mechanic before opening his own business, Jack's Motor Company. Dick's uncle, Henry, had established Heasler Plumbing & Heating in 1928. After Henry's untimely death shortly after Dick's move to Powell, his father, John, took over the plumbing business. Young Dick helped at the shop while attending school.
Dick began his education by attending first grade in Panhandle, Texas, and he finished grade school and high school in Powell. He was an outstanding athlete for Powell High School, lettering four years each in football and basketball and three years in track. He graduated from PHS in 1941, and his athletic ability earned him a football scholarship to the University of Wyoming where he enrolled in the fall of 1941.
He married his high school sweetheart, Gladys Peters, on Aug. 17, 1942, and the couple lived in Powell. Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy that same year and was assigned in the Pacific aboard the USS Independence, a light aircraft carrier that took him into battle at Wake, New Guinea, Rabaul and the bloody battle in the Central Pacific at Tarawa. The Independence was torpedoed on Nov. 20, 1943. The blast destroyed Dick's quarters and many of his bunkmates. Later, Dick was transferred to the "Jeep" carrier Copahee, which in 1945 carried to the B-29 base at Tinian the second atomic bomb dropped on Japan.
After the war, Dick and Gladys, along with Ric, a son born during the war, went to Laramie so Dick could attend the University of Wyoming. He returned to Powell without graduating to help his father in the plumbing business, and from that time on he was the driving force behind Heasler Plumbing & Heating. His business did the mechanical work in 1950 on the Powell Hospital, in 1960 on the Powell and Cody high schools, and many of the Northwest College buildings.
During these busy times, Dick was also busy building a family, adding two sons, Patrick in 1950 and Henry in 1953, and a daughter, Margaret, in 1961.
It was during the 60s that Dick became more active in community affairs. He served as a volunteer fireman for 17 years, serving a short time as chief. He also served for 33 years on the Powell Hospital Board. He was selected by the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce as the Member of the Year for 1981.
He served the City of Powell as a city councilman from 1961 to 1972, on the planning and zoning board from 1973 to 1980, and as mayor from 1981 to 1984 and from 1989 to 1992.
Survivors include his wife Gladys; three sons, Ric of Powell, Patrick of Richland, Wash., and Henry of Mammoth in Yellowstone National Park; and two sisters, Katherine Christiansen of Powell and Mary Lois Jacobson of Grand Junction, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret.
Dick continued to operate his plumbing business until the age of 79. He had just completed the sale of his business only this year and entered into a belated retirement. He will be missed by friends and family.

Larry Dean Mooren ~ October 11, 2002

Former Powell resident Larry Dean Mooren, 63, died Friday, Oct. 11 in Las Vegas after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 16, 1939 in Morrowville, Kan., son of Merle and Pearl Mooren. He moved with his family to Powell when he was about 10 years old.
He completed his education in the Powell schools, graduating from Powell High School in 1958. He was engaged in the construction industry, building trusses in California.
Survivors include a daughter, Jody Lynn Mooren in Las Vegas; a son, Guy Dean Mooren in Marina, Calif.; two grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Mooren in Las Vegas; three brothers, Merle Mooren of Powell, Hubert Mooren of Byron and Bill Mooren of Denver; and three sisters, Ethel Jean Eden of Powell, Vivian Mooren and Kay Flesher, both of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Starrlyn; and two sisters, Connie and Judy.
Cremation has taken place. Private family burial of cremains will take place at a later date.

Michael D. Thompson ~ October 11, 2002

Memorial services were conducted Monday, Oct. 14 in Byron for Michael D. Thompson, 61, who died at his Byron home Friday, Oct. 11 of an apparent heart attack.
He was born April 24, 1941, in Lovell to Deeward Ray and Myrtle (Durfee) Thompson. He was raised in Lovell and attended schools there.
He married Sherry Bauer of Powell on Oct. 14, 1961, in Powell. After short stays in Powell, Lovell and Dillon, Mont., they settled in Byron to raise their family.
He was a member of the Lovell National Guard unit from 1958 to 1963, earning an honorable discharge.
He was currently employed at the Western Sugar co-op in Lovell, a job he had held since 1986. He became a year-round employee in 1993.
Previously, he worked for Baker-Hughes in Powell for eight years, for Linton's Big R in Powell for seven years and for Georgia-Pacific in Lovell for six years.
Mr. Thompson was an avid hunter, fisherman and archer. He enjoyed northing more than teaching someone the basics of archery, fishing, fly tying, hunting and reloading, especially his four sons and their friends and his grandchildren. He loved children and animals.
He decided to go live with his father for what he thought would be just a few months and ended up staying over four years until he had to put Dee in the nursing home.
Survivors include his wife Sherry; sons Ivan Thompson and wife Joan of West Bountiful, Utah, Clinton Thompson and wife Rita of North Salt Lake City, Utah, Riley Thompson and his fiancee Susan of Byron, and Kobe Thompson and his wife Holli of Lovell; three grandchildren, Austin, Cheylee and Ruger; three great-grandchildren, Mason, Madison and Mikel; his father-in-law, Ivan Elmo Bauer of Powell; a brother, Edwin Thompson and wife Teresa of Graham, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

Arthur Martinez ~ October 12, 2002

Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Lovell LDS Church for Arthur Martinez, 64, of Billings, formerly of Lovell, who died Saturday, Oct. 12 at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 10, 1938 in Lovell, son of Francisco and Juana (Velasquez) Martinez. He was raised and educated in Lovell where he played for the Bulldog football team and graduated from Lovell High School in 1957.
He became a member of the Lovell National Guard and also worked construction, which he had done since he was 15 years old. He worked for several different construction companies, and it is difficult to travel on any road in Wyoming or Montana on which he didn't assist in the construction.
On Feb. 18, 1989, he married Emerietta Hanson in Rapid City, S.D. The couple moved to Billings, where they have made their home for the last 13 years.
He enjoyed gardening, both his vegetable garden and his rose garden. He loved to share the "crop" from his garden with friends and family.
Since 1996, he battled health issues resulting from diabetes. Although he struggled daily, he reserved the time and energy to help others.
His family will remember that he demonstrated optimism and showed inner strength, strong will and exceptional character. He was a good man who will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Emerietta of Billings; step-daughter Marnie Johnson of Stillwater, Minn.; step-son Martin Hulbert of Powell; six grandchildren, Kyle, Justin and Gregory of Stillwater, Minn. and Mercedes, Austin and Lexus of Billings; five brothers and two sisters, Raymond Martinez and wife Dorothy of California, Frank Martinez Jr. and wife Judy of Great Falls, Mont., Rudy Martinez and wife Rhonda of Haywarden, Iowa, Jesse Martinez and wife Juanita of Lovell, Manuel Martinez and wife Virginia of Powell, Rita Cobos and husband Ben and Rose Cantrell and husband Jerry, all of Lakewood, Colo.; his sister-in-law, Pat, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eva Martinez; a brother, John Martinez; a brother-in-law, John Jolley; and two nephews, Sheldon and Steve Cobos.
Burial was in the Lovell Cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Dan A. Heimer ~ October 15, 2002

Dan A. (Red) Heimer Sr., 91, a lifelong resident of Powell, died at his home on Thursday, Oct. 15.
He was born in Powell on May 5, 1911, the third of eight children born to Alva Harry and Leah Mae Heimer.
He met and married Anita Watts while working at the Powell Bean Miller in 1936.
He worked in construction, specializing in concrete finishing. During his working career, he helped build many buildings and homes, including his own in Powell. In later years, he worked with his brother, Lloyd Heimer, in laying rock fireplaces and other rock work in Powell.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his children and grandchildren. He liked having his family close to him.
Survivors include three daughters, all of Powell: Charlotte Berryman and husband Bill, Jeanette Sump and husband Ron and Jo Ann Heimer; one son of Powell, Dan Heimer Jr.; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd and Willard Heimer, both of Powell; three sisters, Winnie Clark, Mae Eaton and Nonnie Robbins, all of Powell; and numerous nieces andnephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anita and two sisters, Ada Jinks and Alma Bunn.
Cremation has taken place. A brief memorial service will be held at the Crown Hill Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Luella Cynthia Clement ~ October 15, 2002

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 21 for long-time Greybull resident, Luella Cynthia Clement, 92, who died Tuesday, Oct. 15 at West Park Hospital in Cody.
She was born July 23, 1910, in Madison, S.D., daughter of William Franklin and Fleda May (Harris) Kunkle. She was educated in Greybull and married George Merrill Clement on April 17, 1932, in Belfry, Mont.
She kept books for her husband's business, Standard Oil, for many years until his death in 1980. She worked for Atwood Family Funeral Home, greeting families and friends at viewings at the Atwood chapel in Greybull.
She loved her grandchildren and her cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. She enjoyed cooking for her family, reading, sewing and crocheting. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church at Greybull and a member of the Guardian Council and served as Guardian for Job's Daughters. For many years she belonged to the Greybull Eastern Star, the P.E.O. and the Carnation Rebekah Lodge #26 at Greybull.
Survivors include her daughter, Viola C. Walker of Greybull; her son, Donald Clement and his wife Sharon of Phoenix, Ariz.; her two granddaughters, Vickie Johnson and Luella Carol Knight, both of Powell; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Clement Johnson of Powell and Whitney Johnson of Greeley, Colo.; her brother, Lee Kunkle of Greybull; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; one sister; two sisters-in-law; and her husband, George Merrill Clement on Aug. 26, 1980.
A memorial fund has been established at the Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, P.O. 471, Greybull, WY 82426, to go to the Greybull Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Wyoming Retirement Center Alzheimer's unit.

JoAnn Davey McCrae ~ October 18, 2002

JoAnn Davey McCrae, 46, died at her home in Pepper Pike, Ohio, on Friday, Oct. 18 after a three-year struggle with cancer.
Funeral services were held Oct. 23 at the Garfield Church in Pepper Pike.
She was born July 12, 1956, in Missoula, Mont., daughter of LeRoy and Margaret Davey. She was graduated from Powell High School in 1974 and attended Northwest College and the University of Utah. She obtained her advanced degree in 1983 from the University of North Carolina.
She was employed as a clinical dietitian at Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania.
On Nov. 17, 1984, she married Dr. Keith McCrae and lived in Ohio where her husband is an oncologist at Case Western University Hospital.
She was devoted to her family and particularly enjoyed helping her children with their school projects and extra-curricular activities. She also enjoyed camping, hiking and skiing.
She is survived by her husband and two children, Brett, 14, and Kristen Ann, 12; her parents, LeRoy and Marge Davey of Powell; sisters Jacquie Davey and Susan Davey of Denver; and in-laws, Duncan and Marjorie McCrae of Portland, Maine.

Clarence L. Erickson ~ October 19, 2002

Clarence L. Erickson, formerly of White Sulphur Springs, Mont., died early Saturday, Oct. 19 at the home of his son, Ron Erickson, near Powell. He was 81.
He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Carol and Ruby (Vaughn) Erickson. Following high school graduation, he attended electrical schools.
Between 1942 and 1946, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
On Nov. 23, 1948, he and Edith M. Coffman were married in Billings, Mont.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and the Electrical Union #532 in Billings.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith Erickson of Powell; sons Elmer Whitcraft and wife Jan of Lakeside, Mont., Edward Whitcraft and wife Sheri of Canon City, Colo. and Ron Erickson and wife Sue of Powell; daughters Margaret Halbach and husband Mike of Wisconsin, Marilyn Prichard and husband Bill of Columbia Falls, Mont., Lila King and husband Frank of Florida and Loretta Lukkason and husband Roger of Yuma, Ariz.; brothers Kerwin Erickson and wife Helen of Amery, Wisc. and Stanley Erickson of Palm Springs, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Frank Whitcraft; his parents; and one brother.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at Twichel Funeral Home, 103 E. Garfield, White Sulphur Springs, Mont.

Oliver H. Perry Mikesell, IV ~ October 19, 2002

Former Powell resident Oliver H. Perry Mikesell, IV died Saturday, Oct. 19 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 54.
Born in Laramie, he attended Powell High School and was a graduate of the University of Wyoming with a B.S. degree in 1971 and a M.S. degree in 1973. He then attended Oregon Health Science University in Portland.
A retired U.S. Army major, most of his military career was spent at Fort Detrick, Md., at the United States Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases as a research scientist. In 1983, he was named Army Scientist of the Year for his work on Louis Pasteur's strain of bacillus anthracis. He was the first to discover and sequence the DNA of the deadly toxins in the bacteria, thus leading to possible viable vaccine in the future.
After his retirement from the military, he worked at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, as a research scientist in the National Defense and Security Division.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Mikesell; two sons, Oliver H. P. "Mike" Mikesell, V of Lena, Ill., and Joseph C. Mikesell of Dublin, Ohio; one daughter, Victoria M. Mikesell of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Mitchell Perry Mikesell and Sidney P. Mikesell-Tackett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver H. Perry "Mike" Mikesell and Carol J. Mikesell; and one brother, Patrick Mikesell.

Jerry Lee Hazelhorst ~ October 20, 2002

Jerry Lee Hazelhorst, 63, died Sunday evening, Oct. 20 at the Powell Nursing Home.
He was born June 26, 1939, in Faulkton, S.D. to Alfred and Minnie Hazelhorst. He worked as a truck driver in construction.
He and Elizabeth Schlieper Wheeler were married in Cody. His wife survives him in their home in Powell, along with stepchildren and other family members.
Cremation has taken place, and according to his wishes, no services are planned.

Kenneth Glen Jones ~ October 24, 2002

Funeral services are scheduled today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. at Victory Fellowship in Cody for Kenneth Glen Jones, 65, who died Thursday, Oct. 24 at his home in Cody.
He was born Jan. 27, 1937, in Maud, Okla., son of Leslie Eugene and Bessie (Brooks) Jones. He was raised and attended schools in Maud, later moving from Oklahoma to Casper to work for a seismograph company.
On June 8, 1957, he married Wilma Smith in Rapid City, S.D. They moved to Cody in 1965 where he worked for Boydston-Franzen Well Service for 28 years until his retirement. In retirement, he enjoyed his landscaping job at Northern Gardens.
He enjoyed his grandkids and attending their activities. He also enjoyed RV living in Arizona during the winter, camping, hunting and sports.
Survivors include his wife Wilma of Cody; son Kenny Lee Jones and wife Tammie of Powell; daughters Betsy Payseno and husband Corky, Melissa Bales and husband Jerry and Melinda Jones, all of Cody; a brother, Charles L. Jones of Cheyenne; sisters Bernadine Diffee of Tulsa, Okla., Tina Cleary of Andrews, Texas, Betty Hanks and Johnnie Scott, both of Jennings, Okla.; and six grandchildren, Drew, James, Ethen, Kari, Katie and Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Nicole Peterson.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Cody.
Memorials may be made to the building fund at Victory Fellowship.

John George Leis ~ October 25, 2002

Funeral services for John (Blackie) Leis, 68, Buffalo, will be conducted today (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. from the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo.
Mr. Leis died Friday, Oct. 25 in Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery there.
He was born April 18, 1934, in Buffalo to Kornad and Eva Leis. He grew up in Buffalo and attended Buffalo schools, graduating from Johnson County High School in 1952. After high school, he went to work in the oil fields.
He married Della Schroder in Buffalo on Jan. 22, 1956. They moved to Powell in the late 1950s where they lived and worked until 1977. Then they moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he was a foreman in a machine shop. They retired and moved back to Buffalo in 1995.
His wife died in June of 2001.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and loved to hunt, fish and spend time in the mountains with friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherrie Locke of Lovell and Christine Noakes and husband Charlie of Big Lake, Alas.; one brother, Bill Leis of Buffalo; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son and three brothers. For those who wish, donations in his memory to the Buffalo Eagles Lodge would be appreciated by the family.

Darryl Dean (Tuffy) Taylor ~ October 26, 2002

Darryl Dean Taylor, the father of a Powell man, died Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Madison Valley Hospital in Ennis, Mont.
He was born in Glenrock, the youngest of three children of Raymond Rutho and Laura Vollman Taylor. He attended grade school in a country school north of Douglas and high school in Douglas before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in November 1943. He served as a signalman, gunner and ship's boxer until April 1946.
Mr. Taylor worked the oil fields of Wyoming and Montana, employed by Halliburton Well Services, and operated his water truck business out of Pinedale. He was a pilot for a time.
Then he spent several years as a horse rancher before turning to mining and assay work in Arizona, and later, in western Montana. His final residence was in Laurin, Mont., with his wife of 10 years, Ruth Templin Taylor.
An ace equipment operator, he enjoyed working placer mines in Virginia City, Mont., and one summer on a placer mine in the wilds of Alaska. Before his illness, he enjoyed gathering with friends, miners and family. He served as the life of the party, entertaining with his humor and stories. The coffee pot was always hot, and no weary soul was refused.
Survivors include a son, Russell Ray Taylor and wife Sandra of Powell and grandchildren Rebekah Ruth and Amanda Beth of Powell; a brother, Kenneth Taylor of Douglas; a sister, Iola Pyle of Casper; and grandchildren by son Dana Clark Taylor, Shawn Dee Gehart, Darryl Dana and Echo Bettine Taylor, all of Casper. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Stephanie Rose and James Vance Gerhart II, and daughter-in-law Debbie Taylor of Casper with grandchild Miranda Loree.
He was preceded in death by a wife, Dixie Dawn Taylor in 1991 and a son, Dana Clark Taylor in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia City, Mont., on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. Funeral services will also be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Powell. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Perry C. DeWitt ~ October 27, 2002

Former Cheyenne resident Perry C. DeWitt, 98, Powell, died Sunday evening, Oct. 27 at Powell Valley Hospital.
He was the first mechanic hired at Hallady Motors. An ace mechanic, he worked for several automobile dealerships and service stations. He was also a mechanic for the Cheyenne Police Department.
He loved his music and played guitar with many dance bands and his own band in and around Cheyenne. He enjoyed playing at the VA Hospital and the nursing homes.
Survivors include his wife Sylvia of Powell; his son, Carl DeWitt and wife Alice of Powell; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two nephews in Cheyenne; and several relatives from the East Coast.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Ruby and Ella; a daughter, Katheryn; several brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services are tenatively set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the supervision of Weiderspahn-Radomsky Funeral Home in Cheyenne.
