The Powell Tribune prints obituaries as a public service to our readers. The newspaper considers obituaries to be a community news story. We have established a set of guidelines on the information that may be included in free obituaries.
For a free obituary, the word limit is 350 words. All free obituaries will be edited for Associated Press style. The obituary must include the age and/or birthdate of the deceased, when he or she died and the local connection to Powell. For a free obituary, the notice must be submitted within six months of the person's death.
Free obituaries can include: the person’s birthplace, parents’ names, education background, military service information, wedding date/location, survivors, and those who preceded the person in death. Personal details from his or her life also can be included — hobbies, interests, membership in organizations, church affiliation, employment, etc. Information about funeral services and memorial contributions also can be included in a free obituary.
One black-and-white photograph, cropped to show the person’s face, can be included with a free obituary. If the person served in a branch of the U.S. Military, a veteran’s star also will be included. We ask that you please try to provide a clear photo to be scanned or a high-resolution digital image.
An edited, free obituary can include descriptive words and phrases. However, free obituaries do not include poems, verses, quotes or first-person pronouns (such as “We will miss ...” or “Our beloved ...”)
Whenever possible, the Tribune will give the family or funeral home the opportunity to review the edited version before it is published.
An example of a free obituary is provided below.
Obituaries that exceed 350 words are published as paid obituaries.
We also offer a paid version for obituaries that are published exactly as originally written, without any editing beyond obvious spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.
Paid obituaries can include one photograph or more, and will include a veteran's star for those who served in the military.
The rate is $12.75 per column inch. One column inch is equivalent to 30 words.
We will charge for any space over the 350-word minimum. The total fee is based on the length of an obituary, so a price quote will be provided once an obituary has been received and measured. Billing information should be provided at the time the obituary is submitted.
For a Tuesday edition, the obituary and photo must be received by noon on Monday. For a Thursday edition, the deadline is noon on Wednesday.
An obituary can be sent electronically to [email protected] or mailed to the Powell Tribune, P.O. Box 70, Powell WY, 82435. For questions, please email Tessa Schweigert at [email protected] or call 307-754-2221.
If you would like an obituary submitted to another newspaper, the family or funeral home is responsible for sending it to other publications.
