George D. Ward, 87, of Cody, died peacefully at the Powell Valley Care Center on July 6, 2012.

George was born in Whitehall, Mont., on Feb. 28, 1925 to Hyrum and Jane Ward. George was the 13th of 13 children. At the age of 17, George met Ellen Jean Vickers. They married in 1942 in Hardin, Mont., and had two children.

He joined the army and served in World War II as a medic in Iwo Jima and Okinawa where he earned the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart.

After the war, George worked at Graham Stauton Cheverolet in Hardin, Mont., for almost 45 years. George later then moved to Cody, to be close to his daughter.

George is survived by his daughter, Georgene G. Hert of Cody; sister Eda Hanson of Great Falls, Mont.; grandsons Shawn Hert (Shawna) of Parker, Colo., and Craig Hert (Ana) of St. John’s, Fla.; granddaughter Staci J. Johnson (Kevin) of Cody; and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Russell D. Ward, and 11 brothers and sisters.

Cremation has taken place at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody. A memorial service will be held at a later date. An online guestbook is available at www.ballardfh.com.
