Betty Steele Brandt

(Aug. 28, 1920 – Feb. 10, 2012)

Betty S. Brandt, 91, died Friday, Feb. 10, at the Rocky Mountain Manor.

She was born Aug. 28, 1920 in Powell, Neb. to Benjamin and Fern (Helvey) Steele, sixth of 12 children. She attended school through seventh grade in Nebraska when she moved to Powell at age 14, living with her sister Opal (Walt) Buchli. She forged her age obtaining a work permit to get a job at the Seed Company in Garland. Betty worked a variety of jobs, doing what she could to help raise herself.

In January of 1938 she married the love of her life, Russel Dean Brandt. They were married for 72 years when Russel passed away in 2009.

From that union they were blessed with two daughters; Rhoda Jean and Judy. Betty worked at different jobs in the area including working on the family farm, however; her career consisted of cooking at the local schools, where she enjoyed being head cook at Westside for 20 years.

Betty enjoyed many activities including quilting, needlework, gardening, traveling, dancing, family meals and playing cards. You could see her artistic ability at many of the craft shows where she would sell various types of dolls.

Betty and Rusty spent many days at the Buffalo Bill Reservoir, where they had a trailer at the boat club for 20 years. They also spent many years wintering in Yuma, Ariz.

Betty is survived by her sister, Josephine (Bob) Needles; brother, Dale Steele; daughter, Judy Bennett; grandchildren Tia Campbell, Zane Bennett, Tara (Dave) Schell, Tanna (Darold) Brown, Russ (Diane) Whitlock, Rebecca Whitlock, Jodie (Terry) Warchola, Tye (Jayme) Whitlock, 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Rhoda Jean Whitlock; husband, Russel Dean Brandt; and nine siblings.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. Thompson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.thompsonfuneral.net or to P.O. Box 807 Powell, WY 82435.

To the family of Betty Brandt, What a great lady Aunt Betty was! I learned so much from her throughout my life & I will miss our phone conversations. She loved her family so much & would delight in telling me all about you---especially those cute great grandkids of hers! She was so proud of them & loved to tell me the lastest happening in their lives or what funny thing they said! She has reunited now with Uncle Rusty & the rest of her family & is happy & free from all the discomforts of earthly life! I loved her laugh, her sense of humor, her talents in sewing, crafts, quilting & crocheting & cooking. I remember all the family get togethers & Sundays' when we would enjoy each others company. Her hands were always busy. I admired her so much & I hope you all cherish the wonderful legacy she left for you. My deepest condolences to you. I love all of you...Your cousin...Terri Brandt Williams
