Vern Edward Reid

Lifetime Big Horn Basin area resident Vern Edward Reid, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home between Basin and Greybull. Vern had been a resident at the nursing home since 2003.

Vern was born on Nov. 14, 1935 at Burlington, the ninth of 10 children of James Douglas and Amy Ann (Tanner) Reid. He was raised and received his schooling in Burlington. Vern continued his education by going to two trade schools, one for appliance repair and one for refrigeration.  Vern did some work in appliance repair and refrigeration, but later he farmed and worked 20 campaigns for Holly Sugar.

Vern enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 29, 1955 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1959. On March 1, 1958 Vern received a promotion and made Second Class. He was in the Air Force Reserves from Oct. 30, 1959 to Nov. 28, 1961. Vern went back to farming when he was discharged.

Vern loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Raymond, Fred, Lawrence, Hubert, and Verl; and one sister, Josie Loudan.

Vern is survived by two sisters, Jean DeGraide of Rhode Island and Cherry Dunaway of Kansas; one brother, Ralph Reid of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Burlington Cemetery in Burlington with Bishop Richard Wardell conducting the service. Burial will immediately follow the service.
