John Farris Gilbert, Jr. or “Jack” as he was affectionately called by his mother, of Cody, died at his home in Cody on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at the age of 70 from heart related issues.

John was born March 18, 1941 in Colorado Springs, Colo., to John Faris Gilbert, Sr. and Dorothea Vashti Thorpe.

He was the only child of John and Dorothea. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 1, 1961 and served as Private First Class until January of 1964. He married Carol Ruth Lovell  in Denver in 1967 and had three children.

They were later divorced, and John married Grace Ona Ryan in Brighton, Colo., in 1985. They had one son. John worked in Colorado at the U.S. Geological Survey drafting maps and later worked at the United States Postal Service where he retired. He also loved to paint cars and motorcycles as a hobby.

John was very passionate about classical music and played the piano whenever he had a chance. His love of history kept him always learning and his love for animals was very evident by the vast menagerie of creatures he cared for.

John is survived by his loving wife Grace of Cody; his four children: Craig and Stephany (Gilbert) Bierman of Argyle, Texas; Bradley and Jennifer Gilbert of Gilberts, Ill.; Holly Gilbert of Greenville, S.C.; and David and Amanda Gilbert of North Pole, Alaska; seven grandchildren: Connor Blake Gilbert and Brianna Kay Gilbert of Elgin, Ill.; Isabella Kristine Bierman and Abigail Karyn Bierman of Argyle, Texas; and Ethan Bradley Gilbert, Benjamin Edwin Gilbert and Madyson Anne Gilbert of Gilberts, Ill.; two half-brothers, Patrick Rhyess Gilbert of El Cajon, Calif., and James Edward Gilbert of California.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Faris Gilbert, Sr., formerly of El Cajon, Calif., and Dorothea Vashti Counterman, formerly of Denver.
