Roy E. Harris of Powell died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at West Park Hospital in Cody. He was 85.

Roy was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Dalton, Neb., to Norman and Emilia (Christensen) Harris.

His family homesteaded on the Willwood around 1936.

He graduated from Powell High School in 1944, and worked as a carpenter. Roy was part of building many of the homes and businesses in the Powell area between the late 1940s and mid-1980s.

During World War II, Roy served with the U.S. Army Air Corps 1035th Air Material Squadron.

On his 32nd birthday, Jan. 31, 1958, Roy married Muriel J. Lawson. The couple made their home in Powell, where they raised their children.

Roy was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He also was a 50-plus year member of the Oddfellows and the American Legion.

He received the WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.

Roy loved old movies, all types of music and early mornings at coffee with the gang.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel; sons Aaron (Glennda) of Byron and Doug (Arlea) of Juneau, Alaska; daughters Pauline (Calvin) McAdam of Powell and Carla (Curtis) Cockrell of Cody; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold and Harley.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Thompson Funeral Home in Powell.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Sue Trembath officiating, and burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorials in Roy’s name may be made to First United Methodist Church.
