Former Powell fire chief Lynn G. Straub, 88, died on Sept. 20, 2011, at the Powell Valley Care Center.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Powell Fire Hall on South Street followed by burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.

He was born March 10, 1923, in Carlinville, Ill., the son of Fredrick George and Mable Helen Kelley  Straub. He completed his formal education after the sixth grade before beginning a career as master carpenter and firefighter.

Lynn was a private first class in the U.S. Army medical corps and received an honorable discharge.

He married Janna J. “Netty” Roll on July 10, 1975 in Las Vegas, beginning a marriage that lasted an impressive 36 years. Lynn was a truly devoted family man, attending birthday parties and never letting important dates go unnoticed.

Lynn was the Powell fire chief from 1967 to 1974 and a firefighter for 20 years. In his later years, he chronicled fire department calls and news as the department’s historian.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, rock hunting, animals, carpentry and woodworking. He was a member of the Lutheran church, the VFW and Boy Scouts. He was a master carpenter and building contractor whose craftsmanship can be found in many local homes.

He is survived by sons Pete deHaan (Kathy Williams deHaan) and Rudy deHaan, daughter Henny Newton (Brent Newton, Jr.,) and brother Donald (Eleanor) Straub; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
