Glenda Burr Hecht died Monday, July 4, 2011 at her home in Brookings, S.D. following a long battle with cancer. She was 72.

Glenda was born Sept. 23, 1938 in Provo, Utah, to Glen and Theda (Jones) Burr. She was raised in Orem, Utah and graduated high school in 1956. She attended Brigham Young University in Provo, receiving her B.S. Degree in Medical Technology in 1960. During that time, she met and married Harry Hecht, and during their first year of marriage, she completed her Medical Technology internship at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City.

In 1961 Harry, Glenda and young son David moved to Chicago, Ill., where a second son, James, was born. The family then moved to Lubbock, Texas, where a third son, Daniel, was born. The family spent a year in Australia, then several years in Los Alamos, N.M., and also abroad in Germany. They moved to Brookings, S.D., in 1973.

After their children were raised, Harry and Glenda spent a year as foreign exchange professors at the Yunnan Normal University in Kumming, China, where Glenda taught English in an adult education setting. She also taught chemistry laboratories at South Dakota State University during the 1990s. Harry and Glenda retired in 1999 and spent time in service as missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Germany and in Sundance, Wyo.

Glenda was very involved in church and community affairs. She held many offices in the LDS church and served as director of the Brookings LDS family History Center for several years.

Glenda is survived by her husband, Harry; three sons; nine grandchildren; one sister; five brothers; Harry’s uncle, Bill Hecht of Powell and a sister-in-law, Jackie Hecht, also of Powell.
