Carl F. Wiesen, 89, died on Nov. 26 after a lengthy illness at his home in Powell.
Born on Dec. 1, 1919, he was the second of five children born to Frank and Anna Wiesen in Rockland, Mich. He enlisted in the Army in December l941, where he was assigned to the 826 Engineering Aviation Battalion. He received an honorable discharge as a first lieutenant in February l946.
Carl earned his bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree in food technology from Michigan State University. He later graduated with a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin.
He was hired as a temporary instructor at the University of Wyoming in 1955 and continued teaching microbiology there until his retirement as a professor emeritus in 1985. He loved his work at the university.
Carl married Emily Kuglen in 1965. She died following several years of illness and surgeries due to cancer, leaving Carl with their sons Edward, 15, and Joseph, 13.
Carl was thankful that Sheila (Sleep) Freed was one of his students — it was through her that Carl met and married her mother, Carol. He often thanked God for allowing him to live for 25 years of marriage to her.
He appreciated his friends and often wished he would have been more expressive of his thankfulness to the many departed relatives and friends who touched his life.
Carl enjoyed gardening, cutting firewood, savoring the beauty of nature and camping with his grandkids in the Big Horn Mountains. He looked forward to attending Army reunions and renewing friendships of more than 50 years.
He was a member of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Emily; a brother, Dean Wiesen; and two sisters, Martha MacRae and Gen Vial.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; his children Edward Wiesen (Megan) of Salt Lake City, Joseph Wiesen (Angie) of Cheyenne, Sheila Freed (Dan) of Sioux Falls, S.D., Randall Sleep (Kim) of Garden City, Kan., and Jason Sleep (Ginger) of Powell; and 17 grandchildren.
Rosary will be held at Thompson Funeral home at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, and visitation will follow from 6:30 - 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 4. Burial will take place in Rockland at a later date.
