Lifelong Powell resident Beverly June Sheets, 76, died Thursday, March 6 at the Powell Valley Care Center, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 28, 1931, at the old Whitlock Hospital on Avenue C in Powell to Horal Bryan (Jake) and Maggie Lou (Ewalt) Sheets. She attended school in Powell and lived on the family homestead on the Willwood, working hard at helping her parents with the farm.

Beverly always raised a large garden, and each year she raised a variety of gladiolas and iris.

In her early teens, Beverly was treated for depression and suffered with it throughout her life. In 1970, she moved into town with her parents after they sold the farm.

In 1984, 10 years after the death of her mother in 1974, she and her father moved back to the Willwood into a trailer house behind the home of her sister, Dixie. Within one month, her father became ill and was moved to the Powell Nursing Home. He lived there for three years until his death in 1985. She resided at the trailer for 18 years, until she moved to the Powell Valley Care Center for treatment of diabetes  in 2002.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed her pet cats, playing cards (especially bridge), games and puzzles, math, painting, playing the piano, reading and watching TV and movies. She was always interested in each extended family member.

Survivors include her sister, Dixie Lou Olsen of Powell; brother, Charles S. (Mary) Sheets of Lovell; sister Janet (Larry) Strait of Santa Ana, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her nephews, Christopher (deceased) and Mark Esterholt.

Funeral services will be today (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, with a viewing from 10:30-11 a.m. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be sent to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
