Dale Franklin "The Buckeye Hornet" Roe, died Thursday, June 21, at his home in Basin, surrounded by his family. He was 70.

He was born in Guernsey, Ohio on June 28, 1936. After completing high school, he enlisted in the armed services. He married his sweetheart, Mary Carol Miller, on July 13, 1957, in Newcomerstown, Ohio. They were married 50 years and were parents of five children.

Although he was raised on the family farm, and worked on the railroad, Dale spent more than 30 years driving a semi-truck, long-haul. He drove millions of miles in every state except Maine and Alaska, hauling just about everything that could be put into a freight box, tank or on a flat-bed. His favorite job was driving for Dick Jones Trucking. He trucked loads of concrete blocks that went into the original Wal-Mart building, tons of cement that was used in the raising of Buffalo Bill Dam, and hauled in the new Willwood Bridge. In all those years and miles of driving, he never had an accident.

Dale was a devoted family man and cherished his children. He encouraged and praised them, and applauded their achievements, as well as fixing their bicycles, cars, and even hearts. He had a gentle touch, and lent a helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed playing softball and badminton, talking on the CB, and reading. He would read anything written by Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour.

Dale was preceded in death by both parents, and his brother, Aaron.

He is survived by his wife Carol; five children; Christopher Alan (Marilyn) Roe of Newcomerstown, Ohio; Beth Marie George (and friend Tim Brown), of Huntsville, Mo., Gale Denise Roe of Powell; Jennifer Renee Larson of Basin; and Shawn Paul (Laurie) Roe of Olathe, Kans.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandson; two sisters, Mindy (Jim) Worthington and Verda (Paul) Baker, both of Newcomerstown, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

No services are planned, per Dale's wishes.

Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
