Alma Berniece Miller died Monday, Aug. 11 in Powell after a lengthy illness. She was 85.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the United Methodist Church in Powell, with burial in Peru, Iowa.

Alma was a native of Peru, Iowa, and she moved to Powell from Modesto, Calif., in early 1994. She was a graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, with a degree in elementary education. She married Dr. Charles S. Miller in September of 1945. Dr. Miller was a veterinarian who at that time was completing several years of statewide service as an officer in the Army during World War II. From the early 1950s until 1993 she resided in several communities of northern California, including 30 yeas in Modesto.

Berniece and her late husband, Dr. Charles S. Miller, were both longtime members of Wesley United Methodist Church in Modesto. Dr. Charles S. Miller was an official with the US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for nearly 30 years. They traveled throughout the United States as well as foreign trips. Berniece worked as an elementary school teacher at a private school in Modesto and was involved with numerous local volunteer activities including English language tutoring for non-native English speakers.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Richard and Jane Miller of Powell, Ronna and Donald Corsini of Villa Rica, Geo., Raymond and Ampika Miller of Davis, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings, and grandson, Jonathan Miller of Powell.

Donations may be made to Powell Valley Healthcare Hospice or Northwest College to "Jonathan Miller Music Scholarship fund."

Thompson Funeral Home of Powell assisted the family.
