Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church for Violet Marie Edge, 88, who died Friday, Dec. 29 at the Powell Valley Care Center.

She had lived at the nursing home in Powell for about three years.

She was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Marcell, Minn., to parents of Finnish descent, John Panula and Sanna (Ulvinen) Panula. She earned a high school diploma at Deer River, Minn., and married Milton Edge in 1936 at Estherville, Iowa. They lived in Fairmont, Minn., where she was a factory worker in food processing.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church and loved gardening, fishing, hunting and spending time at the family lake cabin in northern Minn.

She was always proud of her Finnish heritage and ties. Her father, John Panula, lost his whole first family (his wife and five children) who were drowned in the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. He later remarried her mother and started a second family.

Survivors include a son, Keith Edge (Ruth) of Powell; a sister, Ethel Johnson of Big Fork, Minn.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; and daughter, Darlene Allen.

The family, as well as everyone who got to know her, will remember and miss Violet’s sense of humor and wit. For those who wish, the family would appreciate memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Pastor Bill Spencer will officiate at memorial services. Cremation has taken place.
