Bernadine Clair Asay, 86, died at the North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell, Monday Sept. 18 from cancer.
She was born in Hemingford, Neb., Feb 6, 1920, to Milo D. and Edith F. (Slaymaker) Marshall. She attended school in Alliance, Neb. until 1938, when the family moved to Powell. She attended her junior year in Powell, and the family then moved to Lovell, where she graduated from high school the following year, 1940.
She met Verner L. Asay,and they started dating. It wasn't too much longer until they decided to get married. They were married in Lovell on July 6, 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
To this union three children were born. Leroy Marshall Asay, was born July 18, 1941, and it was a sad time for the family when Leroy lost his life in a car accident at the young age of 25. Virginia Asay was born March 18, 1943, and Barbara Asay August 15, 1953.
The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1955, where Bernadine worked at the University of Utah Hospital for 20 years. She was a dedicated L.P.N. on the terminal floor, and had much compassion for the patients she cared for. She retired from her hospital work in 1985, and she and her husband did some traveling to visit friends and relatives.
Bernadine was a good seamstress and also enjoyed doing many crafts, including ceramics and fabric paintings.
She taught Primary in Lovell and in Salt Lake for over 25 years. She also taught the Mia Maids in Mutual for two years. At this time she and her Verner were called to the stake board for six years as Era (Ensign) directors. Her last calling was that of Relief Society secretary in the Harvard Ward in Salt Lake City, where she worked diligently and was still filling this calling when she decided to sell her home and move back to her hometown of Lovell. Besides her church calling she enjoyed doing genealogy and temple work.
She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Virginia Asay of Taylorsville, Utah, and Barbara (Bill) Kryger, and one grandson Cody Leroy Kryger, all of Lovell; a sister, Flossie Wollam of Powell; and many cousins and friends, along with Grandma Bernie's special family, Roseanne and Butch Tullius, their children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Milo and Edith Marshall; her husband of over 50 years, Verner; her son, Leroy M. Asay; and two of her younger sisters, Cledyth Monk and Priscilla Franke.
Services were held Thursday, Sept. 21at the Lovell LDS West Ward Chapel.
