Berniece Dawson, long-time resident of Powell, died Sunday, June 25 at the Powell Valley Care Center where she had been a resident for six years. She was 92.

She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Lattimore, N.C., daughter of Albert and Laura (Bridges) Johnson and graduated from high school there. In 1938, she married Wayne Dawson and moved with her husband to Powell. He died in 1949, and she married Russell Dawson in 1950 and continued to raise her family in Powell.

Russell (Rusty) Dawson died in 2002.

She was a homemaker and well known for the plants and trees that she grew and distributed to many in town.

She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church, White Shrine, Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. Her hobbies were gardening and rock hunting.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne E. Dawson (Angelina) of Lancaster, Calif., and John A. Dawson of Powell; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and four brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at the Southern Baptist Church in Powell, with Rev. Rick Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
