Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 19 in Powell for Matthew B. Van Petten, 85, long-time oilfield services provider in the Powell area, who died Friday, Dec. 16 at a Sheridan nursing home.

The Rev. Susan Adams-Trembath officiated at services at First United Methodist Church Monday morning. Burial was in Thermopolis at Monument Hill Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

He was born Aug. 15, 1920, at Buffalo, son of Matthew B. Van Petten and Helena R. (Sayles) Van Petten. After high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Loyce L. Loughlin on May 20, 1945. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Elks Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the friendships of many years on the golf course.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Van Petten of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Frances Cook of Casper; a son-in-law, George E. Gillett of Cody; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Van Petten of Amarillo, Texas; a brother-in-law, Edward Drazick of Casper; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Jim) Eisenhauer of Sheridan and Teresa (Tim) Howard of Minot, N.D.; and three great-grandchildren, Megand Matthew Eisenhauer and Riley Howard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loyce; a daughter, Norma Gillett; his parents; a brother, Edward Van Petten; a sister, Helen Drazick; and a brother-in-law, Victor Cook.

Pallbearers at the funeral were Fred Whitmore, Richard Holdsworth, Brandon Crichton, George Gillett, Don Davidson and Jim Holdsworth.

Thompson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
