Flossie Dowty died Monday, Dec. 5 at Powell Nursing Home. She was 99.
Born to William and Emma Scoville in Riley, Alberta, Canada, on Sept. 9, 1906, she was the last of six children. The family moved back to Nebraska by covered wagon when Flossie was 4. They stopped in Helena, Mont., for the winter for her brother Bud to recover from typhoid fever.
The journey began again to Nebraska, ending at the family homestead in Banner County. Flossie grew up there, attending school at Twin Tree School House and working on the family farm. She met her husband, Robert Louis Wensky, and they were married in April of 1929 and made their home in Harrisburg, Neb. They had four children.
Flossie operated a small restaurant until moving to Cheyenne in 1939. She always enjoyed working on the farm, doing leatherwork, raising a garden and painting. She was widowed in July of 1947 and continued to raise and support her family. In 1963, the family moved to Powell to operate farms that were owned by her son Robert.
In 1970, she married Tom Dowty and moved to Deaver, where she continued to enjoy her chickens, cows, garden and farming. Her door was always open to a good visit and a home-cooked meal. She loved having her family around her for big dinners, birthday parties and all the holidays. Tom passed away in 1986 and Flossie continued to work on the farm until moving into the Powell Nursing Home in 1994.
Flossie was the last survivor of her family, being preceded in death by her parents and five siblings. She is survived by four children, Robert (Ann) Wensky, Frank (Miriam) Wensky, Ralph (Betty) Wensky, and Charlene (Robert) Goodwill; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Thompson Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. Graveside services will follow at the Deaver Cemetery.
