Funeral services are scheduled today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody for former Powell resident Dorothy Muriel (Merle) Brewer, 64, who died Saturday, July 2 in Riverton after a sudden illness.

She was born Aug. 17, 1940, in Hanford, Calif., to Jack and Ruth Brewer. She grew up in Powell and graduated from Powell High School in 1958. After graduation, she moved to California and went to work for TRW in the space and defense department at Redondo Beach. She worked 32 years as a budget director and senior business director. At the same time, she attended Santa Monica College and received an Associate of Arts degree.

She retired in 1995 and moved to Cody to be near her family. While in Cody, she was a volunteer at West Park Hospital and worked for Park County Emergency Management as a secretary.

After the death of her parents, she left Cody and moved to Riverton where she cared for her niece’s children.

Merle was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and going to fiddler contests. She loved animals and taking her niece, Macy, and nephew, Brodie, to swimming lessons and reading programs at the Riverton Library, where she also worked for a year after moving there.

Survivors include her brother, Bill Brewer and wife Janet of Cody, brother Larry Brewer and wife Zoe of Powell, sister Carol Eckley and husband Charles of Dubois; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew Jody Stransky.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Powell.
