Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 in the LDS Church at Byron for Richard (Dick) Alexander Havig, 78, of Byron and Powell, who died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones Sunday, Nov. 2 following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Billings, Mont., to Elven and Ida (Alexander) Havig. He attended high school in Byron, graduating with honors in 1942.He attended the University of Wyoming for one year on an academic scholarship.
In 1943, he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1943-1946 during World War II. His tour of duty took him to Sai Pan, the Philippines and Okinawa. In February, 1946, he returned to Wyoming and was one of the first students to attend the University of Wyoming Northwest Center at Powell (now Northwest College).
He married Gene Showalter of Lovell on Sept. 3, 1947.
In the navy, he learned the trade of welding, and as the years progressed, he built a successful welding and construction business in the booming oil fields of Wyoming and Montana. He was well known for his welding and oil field fabricating expertise, and it was a source of joy for his family to hear how talented he was in his field.
On Sept. 6, 1984, he met Murriel Humpries, and they spent many wonderful years together. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved sports and had a wonderful sense of humor. His family and friends will always remember him as an adept reader and historian.
Survivors include Murriel Jean Humpries of Powell; children, Kandace (Dennis) Kae of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, Richard (Tracy) Havig of Evanston, Dennis (Deb) Havig of Marietta, Ga., Dee (Julie) Havig of Powell and Debi (Rick) Capps of Mesa, Ariz.; his brother, Ray Havig, of Billings, Mont.; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be in the Byron Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Haskell Funeral Home.
