A former long-time resident of Powell, Iola Christie, died Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Tucson, Ariz. She was 87.
She and her husband, Vince Christie, moved to Powell with their family in 1950 where he became an officer at First National Bank. Following his retirement in 1975, they moved to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1976 and became permanent residents. They enjoyed golf and traveling. In 1988, they moved to an assisted living facility in Tucson where they resided at the time of her death.
She was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Lucas, Iowa, to Jessie Mae Truman and William Truman. She graduated from high school in Creston, Iowa, and her family recalls that she was proud to have been an honor student.
She married Vincent E. Christie on Nov. 27, 1937, in Omaha, Nebr.
She was a homemaker and a member of Union Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star in Powell. She also is remembered as the founding hostess of Welcome Wagon in Powell in 1953.
Survivors include her husband, Vincent E. Christie, in Tucson; her two adopted sons, V. Worth Christie and wife Carolyn of Casper, and Thomas Kent Christie of Irvine, Calif.; a sister, Olive Ray of Englewood, Fla.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jessie Gross; and three brothers, William, Ray and Chester Truman.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in Powell is pending.
