Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Betty J. Scott, 78, who died Wednesday, Sept. 12 at her Powell home from complications of lung cancer and congestive heart failure.
She had been tended by her son for several weeks.
She was born March 9, 1923, on a farm near Broadview, Mont., the seventh of nine children of John Reintsma and Dena (Buss) Reintsma.
Her early years were spent on the farm in Montana until drought and the Great Depression forced her family to move near relatives in Minnesota where her father worked for the WPA. They also lived a short while on her grandparent's farm near Sibley, Iowa.
She attended country schools in Montana, Minnesota and Iowa where she excelled in arithmetic and spelling. Her family recalls she was a quiet and shy girl, but also determined and independent; traits she kept throughout her life.
She moved to Powell in 1947 with her 4-year-old son, Dale, from a former marriage. They lived with her brother and sister-in-law while she worked at the Bullis Furniture mattress factory. She was introduced to Albert Scott, and they were married in 1948.
Their son, Roger, was born in 1950. After he started school, Betty worked part-time as a bookkeeper at the family business, Scott's Plumbing. Later on, she became a full partner in the business, at the same time being a successful wife and mother of two boys. She rejoiced in the progress and accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their children.
She enjoyed reading and doing various hobbies and handicrafts, especially making hand-tied quilts to give to relatives. She helped build two family homes at 506 S. Bent and 266 S. Jones. She built and finished furniture for both homes.
She enjoyed gardening and fondly remembered family fishing trips.
She was a member of the LDS Church Powell Third Ward.
Survivors include a son, Dale Nordby and his wife Gail of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Henry Patterson of Erskine, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Norma Scott of Powell and Mesa, Ariz., Edna Scott of Laurel, Mont., and Mavis Reintsma of Great Falls, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Roger, in 1970; her husband, Albert Scott, in 1955; and all her siblings.
