One of the long-time founding family directors of First National Bank & Trust of Powell, Richard Burton Nelson, 89, died Tuesday, Aug. 28 in Cupertino, Calif.

He was the younger brother of R.A. Nelson of Powell, chairman of the board of the bank, and the uncle of bank president Dick Nelson.

He was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Powell, son of S.A. and Sedona (Fesenbeck) Nelson.

A 1927 graduate of Powell High School, he earned a B.S. degree from Cal Tech in 1935 and a Ph.D degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1938. He went on to a distinguished career as a scientist, working for General Electric and Varian in northern California.

Survivors include his wife Pauline in northern California; daughter Anna Ghandour of Santa Rosa, Calif.; brother R.A. Nelson and wife Elsie of Powell; nephew Richard S. Nelson and wife Jeanne of Powell; niece Julie Sullivan and husband John in New York state; and great-nephews Ty and Andy Nelson.

Funeral services are pending in Palo Alto, Calif.
