(Dec. 25, 1925 - July 3, 2010)Herbert B. Jones died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Powell Valley Care Center. He was 84.

He had spent a short time there, making many new friends and appreciating the kindness and good spirits of the caregivers.

Herb was born Dec. 25, 1925, to Boyd and Pearl Jones in Powell, where he grew up and graduated from Powell High School in 1943. Playing football was one of the highlights of his school years.

He married Martha Rains in August 1943 and left home to serve his country as a United States Marine in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His years as a Marine helped shape and mold the rest of his life. Upon his return, Herb and Martha raised three children while operating the farm that his grandfather homesteaded east of Powell.

Following the tradition of his father and grandfathers, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, serving as Worshipful Master and receiving a 50-year membership pin. He had many years of adventures serving in leadership positions for the DeMolay Chapter and Job's Daughters Bethel. He belonged to several other organizations, including the First United Methodist Church where he also received a 50-year pin.

Herb and Martha loved traveling in their motor home with their grandchildren and dogs. They enjoyed cruises and skiing and fishing. He treasured his family and friends, and there was a mutual attraction between Herb and dogs and children. He had a passion for chocolate ice cream.

Herb will be remembered for his enthusiasm, his zest for life and his ability to enjoy every aspect of that life. He expected the best of everyone and encouraged that by his own example of working and playing hard.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Martha; his son Steve; and his brother Bill.

He is survived by two daughters, Katharine Smalley (Myron) of Riverton and Ann Carr (Colin) of Copperas Cove, Texas; a sister Ellen Jones (Milton) of Pleasanton, Calif.; five grandchildren, Tamera Bigger (Val) of Albuquerque, N.M., Debra Meredith (Lloyd) of Riverton, Jack Faas (Shannon) of Wyoming, Mich., Jasmine Hunter (Tim) in Kalispell, Mont., and Stephanie Leming (Wesley) in Kalispell, Mont.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place, and at his request, no formal service is planned. For those who wish, contributions in Herb's memory may be made to the City of Powell Animal Shelter at P.O. Box 504, Powell, WY 82435.
