Lela (Mooren) Schmitt died June 7, 2010, at New Horizons Care Center in Lovell.

She was born in Morrowville, Kan., on May 25, 1910, to William Mooren and Margaret (Simmons) Mooren. She married Glen Schmitt on June 15, 1929.

In 1934, they moved to Powell. During WWII they moved to California, where she worked as a welder in a shipyard. She and Glen then moved back to Powell, where they farmed until Glen died in 1971.

Lela cooked and managed the café at the Powell Livestock Auction for about 30 years. In 1978, she moved to Lovell to be close to family and friends.

Lela enjoyed gardening, flowers, knitting and crocheting. She always said the reason for her longevity was working.

She is survived by three children, Lee Schmitt (Betty) of Centralia, Wash., LaVerda Mack (Wayne George) of Mineral, Wash., and Sharon Lange (Doug) of Lovell; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be on Monday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell. Burial of cremains will be in the Crown Hill Cemetery.
