(Feb. 15, 1929 - June 6, 2010)J. Allan ‘Al' Miller, 81, died June 6, 2010, at his home in Powell.

He was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Washington, N.J., the son of Mary Bowlby Miller and Joseph Aaron Miller. He attended Lafayette College and Western Reserve University, where he earned his medical degree. He served his internship in pathology at the University of Rochester in New York, followed by his residency as part of the UCLA Brain Research Fellowship.

Al practiced anatomical and clinical pathology in Helena, Mont., Minot, N.D., and Powell. He developed chromosome indentification at the Boulder Training School in Boulder, Mont.

He served with the U.S. Army in Italy in 1946-47. Al married Phyllis Cantwell in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 25, 1955.

He was a member of the Elks Club in North Dakota, and he enjoyed wood-working and traveling. In his later “sofa years,” he was an avid reader and comment-maker on all things political.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Powell; sons, Scott Miller (Michelle) of Monument, Colo., (daughters Madison, Nicole and Olivia), and Geoffrey Miller of Fort Collins, Colo.; daughter, Holly Miller Skarda (Kim) of Englewood, Colo., (son Chase); and brother, Kenneth Miller (Theresa) of Wilmington, Del.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a son, Alaric Miller.
