Colleen Newton, 76, of Cody, died April 6, 2017, surrounded by her family after a tough fought battle with cancer.

Colleen Atkinson was born Oct. 7, 1940, to the late John and Ruby Atkinson in Green Hollow, Iowa. Her early years were spent in a two-room house in Green Hollow, built by her father, until the family left Iowa for Wyoming in 1949 in search of a better life. John and Ruby, along with Colleen and her older sister, Evelyn “Tiny” called Cody their home ever since.

She graduated from Cody High School in 1958 and soon after met and married David Newton on Oct. 1, 1960. They had one daughter, Cindy, and two sons, Mike and Chip.

Colleen spent her last few years enjoying time with her family, which meant everything to her. She amazed the family members with her positive attitude and confidence that she was going to beat this cancer. She lived every day to the fullest taking many drives up North Fork to look at the wildlife. She especially loved searching for the albino deer.

Colleen is survived by her husband of 56 years, David; daughter, Cindy (Norman) Leonard, sons, Mike (Jonna) and Chip (Bonnie) Newton all of Cody; grandchildren, Destiny Leonard of Cody, Michael (Chrystal) Newton of Powell, Crystal (Bailey) Parsons of Powell, Tim Newton of Cody and Jennifer Newton of Casper; great-grandchildren Madyson and Jace Newton and Trent and Henry Parsons, all of Powell. She is also survived by her nephew, Kirk (Kathy) Fitch and niece Paige Fitch from Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Tiny Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on June 15, at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody at 11 a.m. Graveside service will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
