John Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shanks III

John Thomas “Tommy” Shanks III died Sunday, May 7, 2017, at the VA Hospital in Sheridan. He was 56.

He was born on May 18, 1960, to parents John Shanks and Janice (Keller) Fritz in Pittsfield, Illinois.

Tommy joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served several years in Germany before returning home to Powell. He loved to travel and traveled to many places throughout the United States.

Tommy enjoyed playing bingo, playing pool, fishing, and visiting with friends. He loved to tease and joke around with the people he cared about most. He enjoyed baking cakes and making his mom eat them.

Those who knew him well will remember his kind smile that always had a little mischievous laughter behind it.

Tommy was preceded in death by his father, his sister Jill Keller, and nephew Corey Keller.

He is survived by his mother; sisters, Robbie Shanks of Powell, Martha (Ed) Wutzke of Powell, Pam (Tony) Casebolt of Cartersville, Georgia, and Candy Christiansen of Powell; four nieces; four nephews; four great-nephews and eight great-nieces.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell. A celebration of Tommy’s life will follow at the American Legion in Powell.
