Vernon Wayne McGary, 79, died in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on April 13, 2017.

Vernon was born in Powell on Sept. 13, 1937, to Wayne McGary and June Fenton McGary. He attended Powell schools, graduating from Powell High School in 1956, and Northwest College in 1958 with an engineering degree.

Vernon had a great life growing up in northwest Wyoming where he hunted, fished and enjoyed the peace and solitude of the mountains.

After graduating from Northwest, Vernon joined the Navy and attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida, where he fell in love with the south. He met and married Julius Carolyn Walker while stationed there, and together they had three children. They later divorced.

Vernon moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1962. He continued to attend classes at several colleges, finally graduating from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management and Communications. Vernon worked at Bausch & Lomb for a number of years, then owned and operated his own business for a time. He later retired from Ingalls Ship Yard.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his soulmate and wife, Joy Gentile McGary; two daughters Colleen (Mathew) Munley of Warner Robins, Georgia; Maureen (James) Conner of Atlanta, Georgia; one son Wayne (Susan) McGary of Atlanta; one stepson Douglas Robichaud of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sisters Judy (Doug) Loyning, Vicki (Ray) Tollman, and two brothers Gary (Lili) McGary and Kevin McGary, all of Powell. Also surviving Vernon are five granddaughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and in accordance with his request, no services are planned. His ashes will be interred in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
