Mr. Don Hillman, of Powell, passed away at Spirit Mountain Hospice in Cody on Feb. 4, 2017, with family by his side.

Don was born Sept. 15, 1942, in Billings, and was the son of Edward and Louise (Gonion) Hillman.

He moved from Cat Creek, Montana, to Powell and attended Powell schools from the fourth grade on.

As a youth, Don enjoyed playing all sports, football being his favorite. Don graduated from Powell High School in 1960 and earned an associate’s degree from Northwest Community College in 1963.

Don married the love of his life, Judie Shumway, in 1963. They welcomed two children, Raquel and Jason, and spent 53 years together raising a family.

Don worked 41 years for Montana Dakota Utilities. His career started in Billings, then Powell, and finally the last 13 years in Sheridan.

Upon retiring, Don and Judie knew they wanted to return to the community they loved, Powell.

Don served the community in many ways during his life. His service included: president of both the Babe Ruth and Legion baseball programs, president of the Powell Athletic Roundtable, Recreation Board, City Council, president of the PCSD1 School Board, Powell Volunteer Fire Department as a volunteer fireman, and most recently served as the mayor of Powell from 2012 to the present day.

Don was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, and four-wheeling with his friends and family. When not exploring the outdoors Don loved having his family over for barbecues and picnics. He designed his backyard as a place for his grandkids to play. Don was a loving husband, father, papa and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Louise.

Don is survived by his wife, Judie Hillman; his sister, Judy Powell Bradish; his children, Raquel (Stuart) Schwab  and Jason (Amy) Hillman; his grandchildren, Jenna Hillman, Brynn Hillman and Cade Schwab.

Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Powell, on Friday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at the Eagles Club in Powell.

The family is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. If you would like to honor Don with a donation, please make it in his name to one of the youth programs in Powell.
