George L. Wharton died Dec. 15, 2016, at the advanced care hospital in Billings after a long battle with COPD. He was 69.

George was born on July 11, 1947, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Robert G. and Oleva (Eve) Hays Wharton. He spent his early years in Centerville, Iowa, and then moved to Powell with his parents in 1960.

He graduated from Powell High School in 1965 and from the University of Wyoming in 1969. He later got a degree in graphic design, also from the University of Wyoming.

He spent most of his adult life in Laramie, moving back to town with his mom when his health failed.

George is survived by his mom; his two brothers, David (Heather) of Las Vegas and Paul (Marilyn) of Lawrence, Kansas. Also surviving are two nephews, Tyler (Rachael) of Houston, Texas, and Ben (Trina) of Reno, Nevada; and a niece Summer (Matt) Merrill of Yerington, Nevada; and 12 great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, both sets of grandparents and his two aunts and uncles. Services were Friday, Dec. 23 at Thompson Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Crown Hill Cemetery.
