Melvin R. Madsen, 91, died on Dec. 6, 2015, at Spirit Mountain Hospice in Cody. 

He was born Oct. 21, 1924, the son of Otto R. and Bertha E. Madsen in Fromberg, Montana. 

After attending Fromberg High School, he entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He participated in the Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns of WWII and held the rank of sergeant.

After the war, Melvin worked within the agriculture and construction industry and retired from the U.S. government as an appraisal loan officer. 

He also visited various WWII sites in Europe with his wife Pat later in life.

Melvin was a member of the American Legion for 70 years and belonged to various trade and professional organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Madsen, his parents and brothers, Otto E. Madsen and Ernest A. Madsen.

He is survived by his sister Elaine Newton of Billings; stepdaughters, Kyla Shuey and Dawna Casselman both of Nebraska; nieces Peggy Barkemeyer and Jamie Willis, both of Billings, and Carrie Sheffield of Cody; and nephew Monte Madsen of Spokane, Washington.

A graveside service will be held at Rockvale Cemetery on Friday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice in Melvin’s name.

Ballard Funeral Home of Cody is in charge of arrangements.
