Doris Irene Werbelow-Schmidt, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and true friend, died April 19, 2015, following a brief stay in the North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell. She was 87.

Dori was born on Oct. 9, 1927, in Emblem. She grew up on the family farm in Emblem, where her grandfather, Herman Werbelow, was one of the early pioneers to settle the Emblem bench. Her adolescent years were spent tending her younger siblings, working in the fields weeding beans, planting and caring for the huge family garden, canning everything one can imagine, and riding her horse. Dori was a self-described tomboy, well-known for her blasting speed, out-running all the older boys, much to their embarrassment.

She attended elementary school in Emblem and high school in Greybull. During her high school years, she met a Lovell boy named Emil Schmidt. Following their courtship they were married in Billings, Mont., on Dec. 12, 1946, returning to the family farm south of Lovell.

Three children were born to this union, Phillip Herman, Amy Deloris, and Ronald Emil. Doris was a full-time stay-at-home mother and homemaker. Much of her time was spent as a seamstress making nearly all of her children’s clothes. She loved the outdoors spending time gardening, assembling rock gardens, and growing beautiful flowers.

Dori loved tending her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All the children loved to visit Grandma Dori.

She was preceded in death by her husband Emil, parents, four brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by four brothers and four sisters, as well as children Phillip (Cindi) Schmidt of Castle Rock, Colo., Ronald (Marlene) Schmidt of Lovell, Amy (Charles) Hessenthaler of Byron, 12 grandchildren 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Doris has been a shining example of selfless service and Christ-like love. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lovell. Viewing/visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Lovell Cemetery.
